Bethany grew up in Connecticut to a lower middle-class family and from an early age struggled to find respite in an abusive household. At age 13 she became homeless running away from what she called a “bigoted and racist household.” Later, she attempted to obtain a college degree as a veterinarian but suffered a traumatic brain injury from a car accident and became addicted to opioids. She described finding care from “gangsters and drug users” who provided food and shelter throughout her years living on the streets. She cites that the LGBT community won’t look and acknowledge her when walking by. her kids, Dr. Rusty Mae Moore and Chelsea Goodwin opened their home to homeless trans folk. Transy House, as it was called, aimed to be a place where trans people could feel safe from the objectification and harassment. To this day, the continue to live with other trans folks on Long Island, where they've discovered and forged new community affinities. In this interview Chelsea Goodwin speaks passionately of Goth and Pagan culture's relationship to Trans Community as being like \"peanut butter and jelly\". A seasoned activist, having worked with Act Up, Queer Nation and Dyke Action Machine, her piss-and-vinegar vibrancy emphasizes social change from the ground up, rather than legislative reform. Dr. Rusty Mae Moore came out in her 50's and through parenting, her career and travel to Brazil navigated the particularities of her own transition. Together they share their intimate understanding of Trans Liberation and Struggle as shaped by their lives in New York She discusses growing up in the 1930s and 1940s, and her experience coming out later in life. She talks about the importance of visibility, and the difficulty of finding a trans community at a time when everyone had to be so secretive. She was president of the City of the Lakes Crossgender Community in the 1990s. She joined Spirit of the Lakes Church, now Living Table United Church of Christ, and then proceeded to hold multiple leadership positions in the UCC, including on the LGBT Coalition, and the Executive Council, and at the time of the interview was Deputy Faith Work Director for the National LGBTQ Task Force. She talks about her work starting GLBT Generations to address the issues older LGBT people face, and was instrumental in opening the Spirit on Lake apartment building in 2013, and Clare Housing. She believes in the importance of building bridges to LGB groups to become more inclusive of trans issues, and she started the first Trans Day of Remembrance in the Twin Cities."],"mime_type_tesim":["image/jpeg"],"resource_type_tesim":["Moving image","Text"],"creator_tesim":["Satin, Barbara"],"creator_ssim":["Satin, Barbara"],"contributor_tesim":["Jenkins, She was born in Centerville, Iowa and spent part of her childhood on a farm outside Nashua, Iowa. She spent the bulk of her school years in Clear Lake, Iowa. She has an older sister, and her parents are still married. She’s always been very feminine and in kindergarten she was bullied for her gender expression by boys who told her she was like a girl. Pope’s parents allowed her to grow out her hair long and let her play barbies with her sister up until a certain point. She grew up in a working-class family, playing on the farm with her dogs and sister and wearing hand-me-downs. She remembers praying to God to make her a girl. She came out to her parents at 13 when she told them she liked boys and wasn’t interested in dating girls. They were supportive but also encouraged her not to come out fully for safety reasons. In college she identified as genderqueer and was androgynous in her presentation. She stayed in Iowa for college at the University of Northern Iowa. Towards the end of college, she began to realize she was trans when she reflected on her childhood. Her parents and sister were all supportive of her transition. She’s been on hormones for two and a half years at the time of the interview, and she had laser hair removal done. She legally changed her name. At times, she’s gone without hormones and health care while in-between jobs. She worked for the Iowa Democratic Party as a field organizer. It was her first job that utilized her degree out of college. She is now the organizing director with Trans United, which is an advocacy start-up working to achieve trans equality and equity through building up the grass roots political power of trans communities and gender-expansive communities."],"mime_type_tesim":["image/jpeg"],"resource_type_tesim":["Moving image","Text"],"creator_tesim":["Pope, Daye"],"creator_ssim":["Pope, artist, producer, director, and street activist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At the time of this interview, they were a Q-STAGE Fellow with 20% Theatre Company, a Twin Cities company promoting experimental work by women and queer and trans theatre artists. Purcell is the founder of the Lightning Rod annual intensive and Artistic Co-Director of the Lightning Rod company with Marcela Michelle and Keila Anali Saucedo. Lightning Rod is a trans-led arts organism dedicated to Legacy, Development and Opportunity for queer and trans artists / activists. Along with Jay Apollo Simmons, they also founded the Studio he(ART)h Project, which serves as a warming station for unhoused Twin Cities artists. Purcell focuses much of their political energy around issues of housing insecurity and prison abolition. In this oral history interview with Macalester College students Rachel Warshaw and Pierce Hastings, Purcell discusses their upbringing in Connecticut and working-class identity, multifaceted technical and performing skillsets, their work with Lightning Rod and queer and trans theater in the Twin Cities generally, the Studio he(ART)h project, and their abolitionist and leftist politics. Specifically, they discuss the impact of police and military presence in Minneapolis in the summer of 2020 on unhoused people, the Sheraton and Powderhorn encampments and how they led to the creation of the Studio he(ART)h project, and the loss of queer and trans arts spaces in the Twin Cities in the years before the pandemic."],"mime_type_tesim":["image/jpeg"],"resource_type_tesim":["Moving She recalls stealing a NYC Taxi Cab and driving it to Texas, which led to her 18 month stay in a Texas jail. She has served on many trans rights legislative committees, including the Stonewall Democrats and Gay and Lesbian Independent Democrats, and was a delegate for the DNC in 2016. Yet her life before politics was marred by homelessness and substance abuse while struggling through life in New York in the 1970s and 1980s, and slowly coming to terms with her gender identity.
