Although she characterizes experiences for LGBT people in Charlotte during the 1970s and 1980s as dangerous, she also describes how she was able to find a community to identify with in the city's various gay bars and establishments. Ms. Covington describes these LGBT venues in detail, including Oleens, Scorpios, the Brass Rail, the Odyssey, Cinema Blue, Daks, the Bar at 316 (formerly Liaisons), Tags, the Woodshed, Independence News, the White Rabbit, and others. In particular she describes the drag culture of Oleens bar on South Blvd where she performed as a drag artist, and her interactions with the co-owner Oleen Love, the manager Greg Bradford, other drag queens including Casey King, Boom Boom LaTour, Tiffany Storm, and Gypsy Star, and various patrons. Ms. Covington notes that at the time of the interview the transgender community in Charlotte had only been publicly identified for about four years. She relates the history of transgender support groups in the Carolinas, describing Phoenix in Asheville, Kappa Beta in Charlotte, and Tri Gender Association in Greensboro. In contrast to these early support groups, Ms. Covington relates how she founded TransCarolina in the early 2000s to address workplace rights and to serve as a social group with a public face. From age 7, she realized she was not a boy but struggled to find a label to define herself. At age 39, she began her medical transition. Jessica’s life has revolved around three main axes: political advocacy, healthcare, and music. Her dedication to transgender-related data collection led her to work in HIV care for many years, including completing the Transgender Needs Assessment Survey (WTNAS), which she considers one of her greatest achievements. Her advocacy led to the establishment of trans-specific HIV care programs, making significant contributions to the health and well-being of transgender communities. In 1999 she became the first openly transgender artist to release a CD. Her work as an activist, scholar, and artist has garnered recognitions such as the Public Service Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex and the Distinguished Service Award from the New Jersey, but also lived in the Philippines and Indonesia because her father was a missionary. Joan earned her PhD in biology from Harvard University and then started a professorship at Stanford University in 1972. When Joan first came out as transgender and publicly transitioned, she moved to San Francisco. There, she joined a predominantly queer congregation for a support system through her coming out process. Joan’s books, Evolution’s Rainbow and Genial Gene, challenged prevailing theories about the biology of gender and sexuality. Looking back on her research and career, Joan shows us that she contributed to LGBTQ+ activism by doing what she does best: scientific research.
