At the time of this interview, she was the Medical Director for Transgender Care at the University of California - San Francisco (UCSF) and the President-Elect of USPATH, the US Professional Association for Transgender Health. \r\n\r\nPrior to her work at UCSF, Deutsch started a trans medicine program at the LA LGBT Center. In this oral history interview, Deutsch describes moving from emergency medicine into LGBT-specific healthcare in response to a need she perceived for trans-competent healthcare and access to hormone therapy. \r\n\r\nDeutsch reflects on how and why the field of trans medicine has shifted in the last twenty years, moving towards an informed consent model. In this oral history interview, Mananzala discusses his background and initial forays into activism, his work with trans youth of color in New York City with FIERCE in the early to mid 2000s, the distinction between grassroots and mainstream queer and trans movements, and the lessons gleamed from FIERCE's structure, philosophy, and operations. a working-class neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York City, to living as her authentic female self in rural Upstate New York with her daughter, where she works as a forest ranger. She also goes into detail about personal experiences along the way, including her searches for love and a place to belong, as well as her initial forays into presenting as female before she had come out to anyone she knew.
