Sometime during her teen years, Beth experienced what she calls her first goddess vision: looking down at her chest, and seeing breasts. Around the same time, Beth began exploring San Francisco’s hippie culture, writing and performing folk music. In 1972, Beth applied to Stanford’s experimental sex reassignment surgery program. As the years passed, she began connecting with the bisexual community, where she felt more accepted than among the lesbian community. Bethany grew up in Connecticut to a lower middle-class family and from an early age struggled to find respite in an abusive household. At age 13 she became homeless running away from what she called a “bigoted and racist household.” Later, she attempted to obtain a college degree as a veterinarian but suffered a traumatic brain injury from a car accident and became addicted to opioids. She described finding care from “gangsters and drug users” who provided food and shelter throughout her years living on the streets. She cites that the LGBT community won’t look and acknowledge her when walking by. In addition to her work, she has had a prominent media presence on trans issues, specifically issues around trans health care, for over two decades. In this oral history interview, Bowers discusses her upbringing in suburban Wisconsin and initial entry into medicine through obstetrics, the relationship between her initial forays into trans medicine and her personal transition, her education and surgical practice, and her thoughts on trans medical care, politics, theory, and the use of trans issues in the political arena. In this oral history interview, Callanan discusses his upbringing on the South Side of Chicago, his entry into organizing within a small trans community at the University of Vermont in the early 2000's, and his years of extensive work within the Philadelphia Trans Health and Wellness Conference. Specifically, he discusses the origins of the conference, its early work around diagnostic criteria, trying to expand medical access for trans and gender nonconforming people and trans competency among providers, divisions within its organizers, tensions as more cis providers began to attend, and its eventual subsumption under the nonprofit Mazzoni Center. Additionally, Callanan offers his thoughts on the lack of general trans competency in many medical fields, especially in emergency care, and his decision to enter medical school in part to remedy that
