After she experienced extensive and violent harassment from her neighbors after coming out, Phyllis decided that with a law degree, she could protect both herself and others. In 1986, a closeted member of the military was slapped with a DWI after leaving a gay bar and needed a lawyer to keep his case out of the papers. With her fees from that case, Phyllis was able to launch her own practice in criminal defense and transgender law. From there, she went on to create the International Conference on Transgender Law and Employment Policy in 1991, and in 2010 she became the country’s first openly transgender area of New York City. Renee describes the first 30 some years of life as living as an “unconscious male impersonator.” Renee fought in Vietnam and participated in anti-war rallies and demonstrations after being transferred back to the U.S. towards the end of the war. Renee started working as a taxi driver in New York City, a job she kept for 27 years, in order to maintain a flexible schedule to do political organizing. Renee got involved in the drag club scene and joined the House of Sally. Despite the challenges that came with decades of presenting herself authentically while being in a wheelchair, helping queens escape from cops, using her taxi for years as a place to do sex work to In 2001, he successfully advocated for a woman named Sharon Smith to file a wrongful death suit after a neighbor’s dog killed her partner. In 2003, he defended the custody rights of a transgender father. In 2008, he was lead counsel for same-sex couples in the case that instituted marriage equality in California. In 2005, Shannon received the Ford Foundation’s Leadership for a Changing World Award. In 2009, California Lawyer named him one of their California Lawyers of the Year. In 2016 he secured an injunction to stop President Trump’s proposed ban on transgender people in the military. Today, Shannon serves as legal director for NCLR and on the boards of Faith in America and the Transgender Law \u0026 Policy Dakota in 1953 (Sophia continues to use both names in different contexts and uses he/she/they pronouns). After high school, Sophia moved to San Francisco to study counseling psychology. Although San Francisco had been a sanctuary of free thought and expression for many LGBTQ+ young adults, Jon found the experience to be overwhelming. Sophia moved to Idaho and finally felt safe to dress in women’s clothes in the wilderness. Susan earned her PhD in United States history from University of California in Berkeley. While juggling parental and academic responsibilities, she was also exploring her identity in the queer dungeons and drag bars of San Francisco. By the end of her PhD in 1992, she decided to transition to female. While living in extreme poverty, Susan seized on her newfound freedom to explore academics, politics, and art on her own terms – what she refers to now as her “unpaid residency in transgender studies.” Susan eventually returned to academia and went on to become Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at University of Arizona, where she served for five years as Director of the Institute for LGBT Studies and founded the university’s Transgender Studies Initiative. Susan reflects on channeling her anger at the mistreatment of trans people into her life’s work of public storytelling. Through reshaping the public consciousness about gender in her research, teaching, and art, she seeks to create a safe and welcoming environment for future trans
