first in a series of interviews, Janice Covington, a transgender woman and political activist in Charlotte, North Carolina, discusses her formative years and her early adult life. She recalls her early struggles with gender identity, noting that her family doctor prescribed testosterone shots when she was an adolescent in the belief that she was not developing physically as a male. She also recounts her delight in discovering a magazine photograph of transgender people in San Francisco, which gave her insight into her identity as a female. Ms. Covington details her broader experiences growing up in Delaware with a father who served in World War II, as well as her own military service in the U.S. Army and her discharge after multiple bullet wound injuries in 1967. She recounts her experience living as a transgender woman in San Francisco where she located in search of community after leaving the military, and her move from there to Chicago around 1970. Ms. Covington relates that despite the wider gay community in Chicago, her gender identity prevented her from pursuing important life goals and she decided to live again as a male. After this reversion, Ms. Covington met and married her wife and moved to North Carolina where she raised a family and pursued a successful business career until the tragic death of her wife. Julie is a proud grandmother, Presbyterian church elder, and public speaker. She married her wife Joanne in 1972 and is an ordained Baptist minister who worked in the ministry for 20 years before moving on to higher education. In 2003, Julie came out to her wife as transgender. Joanne decided that she loved “the person, and not the package,\" and that she would stay with her spouse no matter what. In 2005, when she came out at work as Julie, the Spring Arbor University fired her. Julie filed a federal discrimination complaint, and eventually settled with her former employer. Since then, she has served as executive director of Michigan Equality, and on the national boards of both Soulforce and PFLAG, while Joanne works as a psychotherapist with a focus on transgender issues. Julie and Joanne often travel together to speaking engagements, where they talk about the surprises and enduring love of their 46-year For as long as she could remember, Lisa felt that she should have been born a girl. Lisa entered into the military at age nineteen for four years, choosing to live off-site rather than risk military staff combing through her possessions and finding her lingerie. After spending the previous two years living life as a woman when not at work, Lisa came out as transgender at age 47. She realized she finally wanted to begin hormone therapy to medically transition, and began traveling to California for treatment. After reconnecting with religion, Lisa became a teacher and delivered lectures at local colleges about the transgender community.
