Raised in Beverly Hills, California, he went to UCLA Medical School in the 1950s. Pauly interned in surgery, but decided to try a residency at Cornell Medical Center in New York. It was during a consultation rotation in 1961 that he met his first transgender person. He tells how little literature there was on the subject at the time. He notes how the terminology has evolved over time. He wrote a paper about it, which was published in 1965. In 1962 he came to University of Oregon Medical School (UOMS, now Oregon Health \u0026 Science University) where group therapy was practiced. He stayed there until 1978, when he became Chair at University of Nevada Medical School until 1995. He taught abroad and ran an adult mental health clinic in Reno. Dr. Pauly is also notable in trans circles for his series of videotaped interviews with activist Lou Sullivan. This interview discusses his early career and the limits and obstacles of information and training in transgender healthcare for providers as well as the challenges to providing transgender healthcare in the nineties, and how these challenges have evolved and progressed. Dr. Meltzer discusses the moving of his practice from Oregon to Arizona, and issues such as insurance benefits accessibility for transgender patients, the influence of the Human Rights Campaign, opinions on the effectiveness of sensitivity training, legal challenges, and his perspectives on the past and present state of resources and training for gender affirming genital In addition to her trans activism work, O'Hartigan published many articles in a variety of mainstream, gay and lesbian, trans, and feminist publications over the decades, worked as a typesetter at a number of publications, and founded and ran the Filisa Vistima Foundation, a Pacific Northwest transsexual advocacy and resource-linking organization. In this oral history with Myra Billund-Phibbs, O'Hartigan discusses her upbringing in rural Minnesota and early adult life as a transsexual in Minneapolis' gay scene, her experiences with Donald Hastings, the University of Minnesota's sex reassignment surgery program, her lawsuit against the state, and lobbying the State Senate on funding for surgeries, her move to the Northwest and various transsexual rights campaigns in Washington and Oregon, specifically her suit against the Washington State Patrol related to their pre-employment polygraph policy, her cases against Seattle-area gay and lesbian organizations, her work on the Portland nondiscrimination legislation, her work with the Filisa Vistima Foundation, and her thoughts on Filisa Vistima's work, life, and events surrounding her death. Additionally, she discusses her thoughts at length on contemporary trans politics, athletics, and movements, the use of trans issues as a right-wing political wedge issue, and the future for trans In 2005, Shannon received the Ford Foundation’s Leadership for a Changing World Award. In 2009, California Lawyer named him one of their California Lawyers of the Year. In 2016 he secured an injunction to stop President Trump’s proposed ban on transgender people in the military. Today, Shannon serves as legal director for NCLR and on the boards of Faith in America and the Transgender Law \u0026 Policy
