This was a pivotal year in Sullivan's life, in which he began extensively researching cross-dressing and medical transition, making friends with a stone butch and a lesbian trans woman who opened his mind to different models of gender and sexuality, and attending meetings of the Milwaukee Gay People's Union (GPU). In the early months of 1973, Sullivan began visiting straight bars in masculine clothing, flirting with women, and introducing himself as \"Lou Reed,\" his current musical hero. He explored, and then rejected, a possible lesbian or bisexual identity which allowed him to express his masculinity but ultimately didn't account for his exclusive attraction to men. By the end of the year, he had come to a fuller recognition that he felt like a gay man; he had found a new gay male lover, and he was open with some people about considering medical transition. 1973 was also the year that Sullivan's longtime, non-monogamous partner began exploring a queer identity and expressing a more feminine style. Lou Sullivan's diary for 1975-1977, following him from the ages of 24-26. Sullivan continued to engage with gay culture during these years, but left his supportive community in Milwaukee when, in 1975, he moved to San Francisco with his long-term partner and became monogamous with him. The move brought the couple closer, but it continued to be a difficult relationship whose complexities often preoccupied Sullivan. Sullivan also struggled to find employment in San Francisco while dressed full-time in a masculine style; his job search led him to get in touch with San Francisco LGBTQ organizations like the Society for Individual Rights and Center for Special Problems, the latter of which was specifically focused on trans people's needs. He eventually found employment once again as an administrative assistant, although he continued to experience discrimination at work due to the way he dressed. Sullivan also continued to experience and write about dysphoria during this year, although he often doubted that medical transition would give him what he wanted and needed. This began to change when, in 1976, he read an article about Steve Dain, a local teacher who had transitioned. Sullivan met with Dain and began seriously exploring the idea of medical transition, but faced extreme opposition from his partner, the disapproval of his therapist, and limited support from his friends. Instead of continuing to pursue transition, he followed his therapist's advice to attempt to reconcile himself to being a woman, dress in feminine style, and make female friends. After an unsuccessful attempt to work with a therapist at the Center for Special Problems, who didn't understand his homosexuality, Sullivan sought help from trans counselor Steve Dain. Dain connected Sullivan to a medical team who helped him to begin hormone therapy. Sullivan also investigated top surgery during this time, and by the end of this diary volume had a surgical date. Sullivan's experience of using hormones and presenting as male was joyous and euphoric. Sullivan also founded the trans men's organization FTM during this time, and continued his archiving work at the Gay and Lesbian Historical Society of Northern California (the future GLBT Historical Society). He also continued writing the biography \u003cI\u003eFrom Female to Male: The Life of Jack Bee Garland\u003c/i\u003e. Sullivan became involved in disabled gay men's organizing during these years, coming to find disability the most useful label for how his body fit into gay society. He had previously made connections (and briefly dated a woman) in the San Francisco multiple sclerosis community following his sister's diagnosis. At the beginning of 1987, Sullivan's life changed irrevocably when he became seriously ill with what was diagnosed as AIDS-related pneumonia. He worked to find peace with the idea of the end of his life, although he would ultimately live for four more years.
