In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Brevard worked at Finocchio's drag revue as a Marilyn Monroe impersonator; a trans co-worker, Stormy, helped her to begin transitioning. She lived at the edge of the Tenderloin, and although she was not a central part of the trans community there, she felt more comfortable there than elsewhere. Stryker interviews Brevard about her early drag career, her transition, and the bars and venues where she spent time. This includes extensive attention to the culture and working conditions at Finocchio's. In 1962, Blackstone became the department's official liaison with the LGBTQ community, and worked extensively with trans women in the Tenderloin, including the group Conversion Our Goal. Stryker speaks with Blackstone about his early life, his career, and the connections that drew him to the community as a straight and cisgender ally. The two also discuss political action surrounding Compton's Cafeteria, including his limited recollections around the famous 1966 riot. Susan earned her PhD in United States history from University of California in Berkeley. While juggling parental and academic responsibilities, she was also exploring her identity in the queer dungeons and drag bars of San Francisco. By the end of her PhD in 1992, she decided to transition to female. While living in extreme poverty, Susan seized on her newfound freedom to explore academics, politics, and art on her own terms – what she refers to now as her “unpaid residency in transgender studies.” Susan eventually returned to academia and went on to become Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at University of Arizona, where she served for five years as Director of the Institute for LGBT Studies and founded the university’s Transgender Studies Initiative. Susan reflects on channeling her anger at the mistreatment of trans people into her life’s work of public storytelling.
