Bethany grew up in Connecticut to a lower middle-class family and from an early age struggled to find respite in an abusive household. At age 13 she became homeless running away from what she called a “bigoted and racist household.” Later, she attempted to obtain a college degree as a veterinarian but suffered a traumatic brain injury from a car accident and became addicted to opioids. She described finding care from “gangsters and drug users” who provided food and shelter throughout her years living on the streets. She cites that the LGBT community won’t look and acknowledge her when walking by. Her message to them is: “say hi, introduce yourself, remind me I’m not alone.”"],"mime_type_tesim":["image/jpeg"],"resource_type_tesim":["Audio"],"creator_tesim":["Hines, Bethany"],"creator_ssim":["Hines, Bethany"],"contributor_tesim":["Silverman, Aviva"],"contributor_ssim":["Silverman, Aviva"],"rights_tesim":["Copyright undetermined"],"language_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-2/eng"],"isPartOf_ssim":["5q47rn87k"],"isMemberOf_ssim":["6682x426b"],"genre_tesim":["Oral Histories"],"genre_ssim":["Oral Histories"],"flagged_tesim":["No explicit content"],"lcsh_subject_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85089810","http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85061720","http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh87000780"],"lcsh_subject_ssim":["http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85089810","http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85061720","http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh87000780"],"dta_subject_primary_searchable_tesim":["Abusive parents","Drug addiction","Homelessness","LGBTQ+ communities","LGBTQ+ unhoused people","Trans women"],"dta_subject_alt_searchable_tesim":["Communities (LGBTQ)","LGBTQ+ homeless people","LGBTQ+ houseless people","LGBTQ+ unsheltered people","Unhoused people (LGBT)","Addiction to drugs","Drug dependence","Drug dependency","Drug habit","Narcotic addiction","Narcotic habit","Narcotics addiction","Abusive families","Parents, Abusive"],"date_start_dtsi":"2021-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_end_dtsi":"2021-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_created_search_ssim":["Dec December 1, 2021"],"digital_format_tesim":["0:41:50"],"is_shown_at_tesim":["https://nyctransoralhistory.org/interview/bethany-hines/"],"is_shown_at_ssim":["https://nyctransoralhistory.org/interview/bethany-hines/"],"hosted_elsewhere_ssi":"1","language_label_ssim":["English"],"has_thumbnail_ssi":"true","blacklight_display_ssi":"generic_file","has_file_content_ssi":"true","_version_":1860198606216101888,"timestamp":"2026-03-20T16:20:34.163Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"dtalimits","items":[{"value":"ex_fa","hits":1,"label":"Exclude Finding Aids"}],"label":"Limit"},{"name":"creator_ssim","items":[{"value":"Hines, Bethany","hits":1,"label":"Hines, Bethany"}],"label":"Creator"},{"name":"dta_all_subject_ssim","items":[{"value":"Abusive parents","hits":1,"label":"Abusive parents"},{"value":"Drug addiction","hits":1,"label":"Drug addiction"},{"value":"Homelessness","hits":1,"label":"Homelessness"},{"value":"LGBTQ+ communities","hits":1,"label":"LGBTQ+ communities"},{"value":"LGBTQ+ unhoused people","hits":1,"label":"LGBTQ+ unhoused people"},{"value":"Trans women","hits":1,"label":"Trans women"}],"label":"Topic"},{"name":"dta_other_subject_ssim","items":[],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"dta_dates_yearly_itim","items":[{"value":"2021","hits":1,"label":"2021"}],"label":"Date"},{"name":"genre_ssim","items":[{"value":"Oral Histories","hits":1,"label":"Oral Histories"}],"label":"Genre"},{"name":"subject_geographic_ssim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_label_ssim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":1,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"collection_name_ssim","items":[{"value":"Audio and Video Clips and Transcripts","hits":1,"label":"Audio and Video Clips and Transcripts"}],"label":"Collection"},{"name":"institution_name_ssim","items":[{"value":"NYC Trans Oral History Project","hits":1,"label":"NYC Trans Oral History Project"}],"label":"Institution"},{"name":"subject_geojson_facet_ssim","items":[],"label":"Coordinates"},{"name":"publisher_ssim","items":[],"label":"Publisher"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":15,"offset_value":0,"total_count":1,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
