At the time of these interviews, she was Program Director for TRANSform Culture, an education and advocacy program of the Pride Foundation, a Seattle-area philanthropic organization prioritizing movements led by queer and trans people of color. In addition to her work with Pride Foundation, Viena was a Co-Chair both of United Territories of Pacific Islanders Alliance (UTOPIA,) an advocacy and mutual support organization led by and serving members of the Pacific Islander LGBTQI community, and of the first-ever Washington State LGBTQ Commission. In the first part of this oral history interview, Viena discusses her upbringing in Samoa surrounded by fa'afafine family members, mentors, and peers, her experiences of family life, school, religion, and fa'afafine identity as a child, and the beginnings of her trans activism after her move to Hawai'i at the age of 17 and subsequent estrangement from her family. Additionally, she discusses her thoughts on the value of experiential and cultural knowledge and research justice as part of her work, the insufficiency of mainstream, assimilationist narratives of transness, and the widespread exclusion of Indigenous understandings of gender and gender expression. In the second part of the interview, Viena discusses her move to Seattle and the relationship between her experiences in community with other sex workers and her political activism, her thoughts on fa'afafine and trans sisterhood and chosen family, transformative justice, and the problems of respectability in the nonprofit world, and her work with the Trans Justice Funding Project. Additionally, she discusses the lack of engagement around sex work among mainstream trans organizations, her thoughts on groups and activists doing vital work, and her visions for the Cuevas, an Indigenous-Latinx, non-binary community organizer, educator, and peace practitioner based in Orlando, Florida. Since co-founding the organization in 2016 following the Pulse nightclub shooting, Cuevas has served as the executive director of QLatinx, a racial, social, and gender justice movement working toward the advancement of intersecting LGBTQ+ Latinx issues. Additionally, Cuevas has served as a fellow with the Trans Justice Funding Project, and as a board member of the Peace and Justice Institute and the City of Orlando's Office of Multicultural Affairs. In this oral history interview, Cuevas discusses their early life as a child of migrant agricultural workers in southwest Florida and initial forays into activism and queer and trans community organizing, their work to build and maintain healing and organizing spaces for queer and trans people of color in the Orlando area, especially following the Pulse nightclub shooting, their experience as a fellow with the Trans Justice Funding Project and their thoughts on the U.S. trans activism landscape broadly, and their visions of a better future. Additionally, they discuss the impacts of COVID-19 on queer and trans people of color in tourism-dependent central Florida, the direct aid programs set up by QLatinx in response, and the racial justice uprisings in central Florida in the summer of 2020 and the responses to them."],"mime_type_tesim":["image/jpeg"],"resource_type_tesim":["Moving image","Text"],"creator_tesim":["Cuevas, Christopher J."],"creator_ssim":["Cuevas, Christopher J."],"contributor_tesim":["Beam, Myrl","Billund-Phibbs, Myra"],"contributor_ssim":["Beam, Myrl","Billund-Phibbs, Myra"],"rights_tesim":["Copyright undetermined"],"publisher_tesim":["University of Minnesota Minneapolis Libraries"],"publisher_ssim":["University of Minnesota Minneapolis Libraries"],"language_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-2/eng"],"based_near_tesim":["http://www.geonames.org/4167147"],"based_near_ssim":["http://www.geonames.org/4167147"],"isPartOf_ssim":["2b88qc34d"],"isMemberOf_ssim":["vq27zn49p"],"genre_tesim":["Oral Histories","Transcriptions"],"genre_ssim":["Oral Histories","Transcriptions"],"flagged_tesim":["No explicit content"],"other_subject_tesim":["QLatinx","Trans Justice Funding Project"],"other_subject_ssim":["QLatinx","Trans Justice Funding Project"],"dta_other_subject_tesim":["QLatinx","Trans Justice Funding Project"],"dta_subject_primary_searchable_tesim":["BIPOC","Indigenous LGBTQ+ people","Latino/a/x LGBTQ+ people","LGBTQ+ activism","Non-binary people","Queer community","Queer people of color","Transgender community","Transgender people of color","QLatinx","Trans Justice Funding Project"],"dta_subject_alt_searchable_tesim":["Activism (LGBTQ)","LGBTQ+ Latinas","LGBTQ+ Latine people","LGBTQ+ Latinos","LGBTQ+ Latinx people","Latinas (LGBTQ)","Latine people (LGBTQ)","Latinos (LGBTQ)","Latinx people (LGBTQ)","LGBTQ+ Indigenous people","Indigenous people (LGBTQ)","Nonbinary people","Enbies","NB-ies","QPOC","Black, Indigenous, and people of color","Black, Indigenous, and people of colour"],"date_start_dtsi":"2020-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_end_dtsi":"2020-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_created_search_ssim":["Sep September 28, 2020"],"is_shown_at_tesim":["https://umedia.lib.umn.edu/item/p16022coll97:217"],"is_shown_at_ssim":["https://umedia.lib.umn.edu/item/p16022coll97:217"],"hosted_elsewhere_ssi":"1","language_label_ssim":["English"],"subject_geojson_facet_ssim":["{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-81.37924\",\"28.53834\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"Orlando\"}}"],"subject_coordinates_geospatial":["28.53834,-81.37924"],"subject_geographic_hier_ssim":["Florida||Orange||Orlando"],"subject_geographic_ssim":["Orlando","Florida","Orange","United States"],"subject_geographic_tesim":["Orlando","Florida","Orange","United States"],"has_thumbnail_ssi":"true","blacklight_display_ssi":"generic_file","has_file_content_ssi":"true","_version_":1842245181209837568,"timestamp":"2025-09-03T12:18:33.843Z","score":1.0},{"id":"fb494874x","system_create_dtsi":"2022-11-19T02:13:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-09-03T12:10:10Z","date_uploaded_dtsi":"2022-11-19T02:13:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2022-11-19T02:13:54Z","model_ssi":"GenericFile","has_model_ssim":["GenericFile"],"date_created_tesim":["2022-11-19"],"date_created_ssim":["2022-11-19"],"visibility_ssi":"public","new_model_ssi":"GenericObject","dta_all_subject_ssim":["BIPOC","Genderqueer people","LGBTQ+ spiritual people","Non-binary people"],"dta_homosaurus_subject_ssim":["BIPOC","Genderqueer people","LGBTQ+ spiritual people","Non-binary people"],"date_created_search_tesim":["Sep September 4, 2020"],"date_created_display_ssim":["Sep. 4, 2020"],"dta_dates_ssim":["2020"],"dta_sortable_date_dtsi":"2020-09-04T00:00:00Z","ident_tesi":"fb494874x","identifier_ssim":["fb494874x"],"collection_name_ssim":["Oral Histories with People of Color"],"institution_name_ssim":["Louisiana Trans Oral History Project"],"primary_institution_ssi":"Louisiana Trans Oral History Project","depositor_ssim":["arona.s@northeastern.edu"],"depository_tesim":["arona.s@northeastern.edu"],"title_tesim":["Interview with Dre Tarleton"],"title_ssim":["Interview with Dre Tarleton"],"label_tesim":["Interview with Dre Tarleton"],"description_tesim":["An interview with Dre Tarleton, who identifies as non-binary / genderqueer and uses they/them pronouns.
