Three major events happened to Sullivan during this time: he befriended Emmon Bodfish, another transmasculine person attracted to men; he grieved his brother Patrick, who died in a motorcycle accident in 1979; and he ended his decade-long relationship with his partner. He nonetheless kept a busy schedule whenever it was possible, continuing his involvement with the trans men's organization FTM, gay men's disability community, and the Gay and Lesbian Historical Society of Northern California. He also sought out several casual partners in San Francisco's gay community, maintaining an ongoing connection with one. Sullivan also achieved a major personal goal this year in signing a contract to publish his biography of Jack Bee Garland. He continued to do archival research, traveling as far as Hawaii, to complete the book, and handed in the manuscript in the late autumn. In November, despite his declining health, Sullivan had an additional minor revision to his bottom surgery. He ended the year on an upbeat note, writing that he'd been lucky to survive it. He was also grieving his sister Kathleen, who died this year after a long illness. Sullivan maintained community commitments when he was able, writing that he wanted to spend his remaining time being of service to others. He focused on transmasculine organizing, including with the organization he founded, FTM. Sullivan also continued to spend fulfilling time with other gay men, attending the 1989 California Men's Gathering and pursuing friendships and casual relationships. He prepared for the publication of his biography of Jack Bee Garland, and continued his educational work, traveling to Reno to record interviews with psychologist Ira Pauly. Sullivan once again devoted his final entry of the year to his gratefulness for another year alive as a man. Sullivan by this point had long since outlived his doctors' initial expectations for his survival, but his health was deteriorating rapidly. He focused his remaining energy on community service, particularly with FTM, the trans men's organization he had founded. He also recorded the last of his yearly video interviews with Dr. Ira Pauly. In 1990, Sullivan's book \u003ci\u003eFrom Female to Male: The Life of Jack Bee Garland\u003c/i\u003e was released by Alyson Publications; Sullivan had written in his diary for many years about his wish to become a traditionally published author, and he wrote extensively in this volume of the pride, validation, and sense of service to Garland's memory that this new book gave him. Sullivan's final months were spent with his family, loved ones, and local volunteers, who helped him with his daily care. On February 27, 1991, he wrote his final entry, describing the donation of his papers to the Gay and Lesbian Historical Society of Northern California (now the GLBT Historical Society), which he had cofounded. Sullivan's last words in his diary were, \"I'm sure there's a lot more I should be writing here, but I'm gonna sign off here now.\" He would die three days later on March 2. Louis Graydon Sullivan (1951-1991) was a gay trans man from Milwaukee, WI who lived much of his adult life in San Francisco.
