A young couple, John and Mary, are dissatisfied with their sex roles, each thinking that the other sex has the better of it. They hear about the great Doctor Transit and discover that Transit can change sexes. The two complete their transitions with the help of Doctor Transit and live happily until John, now Joan, transitions back to the prophet Jeremiah and takes up the work of Doctor Transit after his death. The novel does not view transition fondly, with John's character becoming increasingly volatile after transition, and there is misogyny throughout. However, the novel is still one of the earliest works of transgender science fiction."],"mime_type_tesim":["application/pdf"],"resource_type_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Schneider, Isidor"],"creator_ssim":["Schneider, Isidor"],"contributor_tesim":["Hill, Hank"],"contributor_ssim":["Hill, Hank"],"rights_tesim":["No known copyright"],"publisher_tesim":["Boni \u0026 Liveright"],"publisher_ssim":["Boni \u0026 Liveright"],"language_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-2/eng"],"isPartOf_ssim":["s1784k75z"],"isMemberOf_ssim":["p5547r766"],"date_issued_tesim":["1925"],"genre_tesim":["Fiction"],"genre_ssim":["Fiction"],"flagged_tesim":["No explicit content"],"dta_subject_primary_searchable_tesim":["Detransitioning","Gender non-conforming people","LGBTQ+ fiction","LGBTQ+ science fiction","Transgender science fiction","Transitioning (Gender)"],"dta_subject_alt_searchable_tesim":["Transitioning (Transgender)","Detransition","Fiction (LGBTQ)","Science fiction (LGBTQ)"],"date_start_dtsi":"1925-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_end_dtsi":"1925-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_issued_search_ssim":["1925"],"analog_format_tesim":["Original brown cloth boards with decorative title script in black."],"hosted_elsewhere_ssi":"0","language_label_ssim":["English"],"has_thumbnail_ssi":"true","blacklight_display_ssi":"generic_file","has_file_content_ssi":"true","related_url_tesim":["https://uwaterloo.ca/library/special-collections-archives/blog/post/doctor-transit"],"_version_":1812464505778601984,"timestamp":"2024-10-09T19:07:28.558Z","score":1.0},{"id":"np193968d","system_create_dtsi":"2026-01-27T16:21:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2026-02-17T21:10:35Z","date_uploaded_dtsi":"2026-01-27T16:21:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2026-01-27T16:21:12Z","model_ssi":"GenericFile","has_model_ssim":["GenericFile"],"date_created_tesim":["2026-01-27"],"date_created_ssim":["2026-01-27"],"visibility_ssi":"public","new_model_ssi":"GenericObject","dta_all_subject_ssim":["Closeted transgender people","Crossdressing","Detransitioning","Drag community","Drag queens","Gay sex workers","Gender expression","Gender-affirming surgery","Hormones","LGBTQ+ bars","LGBTQ+ communities","LGBTQ+ people in the military","MtFs","Police raids","Public sex","Sex work","Transgender community","Transgender sex workers"],"dta_other_subject_ssim":["Chukker Club","Felicia Elizondo","Harry Benjamin","Leslie St. Clair","Screaming Queens","Tenderloin","Wendy Kohler"],"dta_homosaurus_subject_ssim":["Closeted transgender people","Crossdressing","Detransitioning","Drag community","Drag queens","Gay sex workers","Gender expression","Gender-affirming surgery","Hormones","LGBTQ+ bars","LGBTQ+ communities","LGBTQ+ people in the military","MtFs","Police raids","Public sex","Sex work","Transgender community","Transgender sex workers"],"date_created_search_tesim":["2001"],"date_temporal_search_tesim":["1960 to 1969"],"date_created_display_ssim":["2001"],"date_temporal_display_ssim":["1960 to 1969"],"dta_dates_ssim":["2001"],"dta_sortable_date_dtsi":"2001-01-01T00:00:00Z","ident_tesi":"np193968d","identifier_ssim":["np193968d"],"collection_name_ssim":["Oral Histories with People of Color"],"institution_name_ssim":["GLBT Historical Society"],"primary_institution_ssi":"GLBT Historical Society","depositor_ssim":["i.fellman@northeastern.edu"],"depository_tesim":["i.fellman@northeastern.edu"],"title_tesim":["Felicia \"Flames\" Elizando interview, part 1"],"title_ssim":["Felicia \"Flames\" Elizando interview, part 1"],"label_tesim":["Felicia \"Flames\" Elizando interview, part 1"],"description_tesim":["Susan Stryker interviews Felicia Elizondo, known as Felicia Flames, who was a sex worker, drag queen, and trans woman strongly associated with San Francisco's Tenderloin district. In this section, Elizondo tells her life story; she was born in Texas and moved to San Francisco as a teenager, staying for much of her life, with the exception of an early period when she returned to Texas and joined the Army in an attempt to become straight and cisgender. She extensively describes the scene of sex workers and LGBTQ people who spent time at Compton's Cafeteria and the neighboring Chukker Club, as well as her transition, professional history, and the experience of sex work in the Tenderloin. Elizondo witnessed the 1960s cultural shift among gender-nonconforming sex workers in the Tenderloin, in which they ceased to present themselves as feminine men and embraced the identity of trans women. first in a series of interviews, Janice Covington, a transgender woman and political activist in Charlotte, North Carolina, discusses her formative years and her early adult life. She recalls her early struggles with gender identity, noting that her family doctor prescribed testosterone shots when she was an adolescent in the belief that she was not developing physically as a male. She also recounts her delight in discovering a magazine photograph of transgender people in San Francisco, which gave her insight into her identity as a female. Ms. Covington details her broader experiences growing up in Delaware with a father who served in World War II, as well as her own military service in the U.S. Army and her discharge after multiple bullet wound injuries in 1967. She recounts her experience living as a transgender woman in San Francisco where she located in search of community after leaving the military, and her move from there to Chicago around 1970. Ms. Covington relates that despite the wider gay community in Chicago, her gender identity prevented her from pursuing important life goals and she decided to live again as a male. After this reversion, Ms. Covington met and married her wife and moved to North Carolina where she raised a family and pursued a successful business career until the tragic death of her wife. Additional topics discussed in the interview include discussion of the work of the Imperial Court and the Lavender Panthers, and changes in the naming of transgender people over time."],"mime_type_tesim":["image/jpeg"],"resource_type_tesim":["Audio"],"creator_tesim":["Allison, Janice Covington","Wright, Christina"],"creator_ssim":["Allison, Janice Covington","Wright, Christina"],"rights_tesim":["Copyright undetermined"],"publisher_tesim":["J. Lou Sullivan's diary for 1975-1977, following him from the ages of 24-26. Sullivan continued to engage with gay culture during these years, but left his supportive community in Milwaukee when, in 1975, he moved to San Francisco with his long-term partner and became monogamous with him. The move brought the couple closer, but it continued to be a difficult relationship whose complexities often preoccupied Sullivan. Sullivan also struggled to find employment in San Francisco while dressed full-time in a masculine style; his job search led him to get in touch with San Francisco LGBTQ organizations like the Society for Individual Rights and Center for Special Problems, the latter of which was specifically focused on trans people's needs. He eventually found employment once again as an administrative assistant, although he continued to experience discrimination at work due to the way he dressed. Sullivan also continued to experience and write about dysphoria during this year, although he often doubted that medical transition would give him what he wanted and needed. This began to change when, in 1976, he read an article about Steve Dain, a local teacher who had transitioned. Sullivan met with Dain and began seriously exploring the idea of medical transition, but faced extreme opposition from his partner, the disapproval of his therapist, and limited support from his friends. Instead of continuing to pursue transition, he followed his therapist's advice to attempt to reconcile himself to being a woman, dress in feminine style, and make female friends. Louis Graydon Sullivan (1951-1991) was a gay trans man from Milwaukee, WI who lived much of his adult life in San Francisco. A diarist, amateur historian, and administrative assistant, Sullivan is best known for the detailed and thoughtful diary he kept from childhood until his death from AIDS at age 39."],"mime_type_tesim":["application/pdf"],"resource_type_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Sullivan, Lou"],"creator_ssim":["Sullivan, Lou"],"rights_tesim":["In
