Lou Sullivan's diary for 1973, detailing his life as a 22-year-old, his self-recognition as a trans man, and his complex relationship with his long-term boyfriend. This was a pivotal year in Sullivan's life, in which he began extensively researching cross-dressing and medical transition, making friends with a stone butch and a lesbian trans woman who opened his mind to different models of gender and sexuality, and attending meetings of the Milwaukee Gay People's Union (GPU). In the early months of 1973, Sullivan began visiting straight bars in masculine clothing, flirting with women, and introducing himself as \"Lou Reed,\" his current musical hero. He explored, and then rejected, a possible lesbian or bisexual identity which allowed him to express his masculinity but ultimately didn't account for his exclusive attraction to men. By the end of the year, he had come to a fuller recognition that he felt like a gay man; he had found a new gay male lover, and he was open with some people about considering medical transition. 1973 was also the year that Sullivan's longtime, non-monogamous partner began exploring a queer identity and expressing a more feminine style. Sullivan also founded the trans men's organization FTM during this time, and continued his archiving work at the Gay and Lesbian Historical Society of Northern California (the future GLBT Historical Society). Sullivan became involved in disabled gay men's organizing during these years, coming to find disability the most useful label for how his body fit into gay society. At the beginning of 1987, Sullivan's life changed irrevocably when he became seriously ill with what was diagnosed as AIDS-related pneumonia. In 1990, Sullivan's book \u003ci\u003eFrom Female to Male: The Life of Jack Bee Garland\u003c/i\u003e was released by Alyson Publications; Sullivan had written in his diary for many years about his wish to become a traditionally published author, and he wrote extensively in this volume of the pride, validation, and sense of service to Garland's memory that this new book gave him. Sullivan's final months were spent with his family, loved ones, and local volunteers, who helped him with his daily care. On February 27, 1991, he wrote his final entry, describing the donation of his papers to the Gay and Lesbian Historical Society of Northern California (now the GLBT Historical Society), which he had cofounded. Sullivan's last words in his diary were, \"I'm sure there's a lot more I should be writing here, but I'm gonna sign off here now.\" He would die three days later on March 2.
