The city was segregated in his early childhood, and his parents were vocal advocates for the Black community. Charley struggled with mental health and addiction from a very young age; he estimates being admitted to psychiatric institutions over 70 times. Charley began transitioning at age 50, and since transitioning and getting sober his physical and mental health have improved significantly. Charley attended the all-male HBCU Morehouse College, currently serves on the LGBTQ Advisory Board for UVA, and is the board chair for Her father founded the New York Buddhist Church in 1938 and Hoshina buried questions about her gender identity under the pressure to “set an example” as the minister’s son. After years of therapy, Hoshina underwent gender affirming surgery at the age of 70. To her relief, the Buddhist church and study center were accepting of her change. Miss Major Griffin-Gracy was one of a group of transgender women on the front lines of the crowd at the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969, fighting back against state oppression and police brutality after the Stonewall was raided by the police yet again. From 2006-2015 she was a key member and executive director of the Transgender Gender Variant Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP), which advocates for currently and formerly incarcerated transgender people.
