At the time of this oral history, Pérez was working as a documentary filmmaker. They spend a significant amount of time speaking about a webseries they were working on called \"America in Transition\". Pérez also talks about the power of stories, the transgender tipping point, racism and tokenization, his encounters with healthcare, toxic masculinity, and his experiences with workplace discrimination within LGBT organizations. Additionally, they share some of their experiences working with a trans resource and support line called The Trans Lifeline. She was president of the City of the Lakes Crossgender Community in the 1990s. She joined Spirit of the Lakes Church, now Living Table United Church of Christ, and then proceeded to hold multiple leadership positions in the UCC, including on the LGBT Coalition, and the Executive Council, and at the time of the interview was Deputy Faith Work Director for the National LGBTQ Task Force. She talks about her work starting GLBT Generations to address the issues older LGBT people face, and was instrumental in opening the Spirit on Lake apartment building in 2013, and Clare Housing. She believes in the importance of building bridges to LGB groups to become more inclusive of trans issues, and she started the first Trans Day of Remembrance in the Twin She was born in Centerville, Iowa and spent part of her childhood on a farm outside Nashua, Iowa. She spent the bulk of her school years in Clear Lake, Iowa. She has an older sister, and her parents are still married. She’s always been very feminine and in kindergarten she was bullied for her gender expression by boys who told her she was like a girl. Pope’s parents allowed her to grow out her hair long and let her play barbies with her sister up until a certain point. She grew up in a working-class family, playing on the farm with her dogs and sister and wearing hand-me-downs. She remembers praying to God to make her a girl. She came out to her parents at 13 when she told them she liked boys and wasn’t interested in dating girls. They were supportive but also encouraged her not to come out fully for safety reasons. In college she identified as genderqueer and was androgynous in her presentation. She stayed in Iowa for college at the University of Northern Iowa. Towards the end of college, she began to realize she was trans when she reflected on her childhood. Her parents and sister were all supportive of her transition. She’s been on hormones for two and a half years at the time of the interview, and she had laser hair removal done. She legally changed her name. At times, she’s gone without hormones and health care while in-between jobs. She worked for the Iowa Democratic Party as a field organizer. It was her first job that utilized her degree out of college. She is now the organizing director with Trans United, which is an advocacy start-up working to achieve trans equality and equity through building up the grass roots political power of trans In this oral history interview, Corprew discusses his upbringing and experiences of housing and financial instability, his time as a board member of TAP Virginia, the organization's mission, day-to-day operations, and importance to local transgender adults experiencing homelessness, the need for trans and LGBTQ organizations led by Black and Brown trans people, and the vital importance of mutual aid networks and community care for Black trans people. Along with Jay Apollo Simmons, they also founded the Studio he(ART)h Project, which serves as a warming station for unhoused Twin Cities artists. Purcell focuses much of their political energy around issues of housing insecurity and prison abolition. In this oral history interview with Macalester College students Rachel Warshaw and Pierce Hastings, Purcell discusses their upbringing in Connecticut and working-class identity, multifaceted technical and performing skillsets, their work with Lightning Rod and queer and trans theater in the Twin Cities generally, the Studio he(ART)h project, and their abolitionist and leftist politics. Specifically, they discuss the impact of police and military presence in Minneapolis in the summer of 2020 on unhoused people, the Sheraton and Powderhorn encampments and how they led to the creation In this oral history interview, Gore discusses the beginnings of her activism and community organizing as a member of HOPE (Homeless Organizing for Power and Equality,) a Memphis direct action and support group, the over-policing and housing insecurity faced by Black trans women in Memphis and throughout the country, her work in coalition-building with other Black trans women-led groups organizing to provide housing for and combat criminalization of Black trans women and the urgency of coalition-building and cohesion between movements, her work co-founding and operating My Sistah's House, a drop-in space and emergency housing provider for Black trans women in Memphis, and its current project to build 20 tiny homes for Black trans women in Memphis.
