The two complete their transitions with the help of Doctor Transit and live happily until John, now Joan, transitions back to the prophet Jeremiah and takes up the work of Doctor Transit after his death. The novel does not view transition fondly, with John's character becoming increasingly volatile after transition, and there is misogyny throughout.
