Bethany grew up in Connecticut to a lower middle-class family and from an early age struggled to find respite in an abusive household. At age 13 she became homeless running away from what she called a “bigoted and racist household.” Later, she attempted to obtain a college degree as a veterinarian but suffered a traumatic brain injury from a car accident and became addicted to opioids. She described finding care from “gangsters and drug users” who provided food and shelter throughout her years living on the streets. She cites that the LGBT community won’t look and acknowledge her when walking by. Her message to them is: “say hi, introduce yourself, remind me I’m not alone.”"],"mime_type_tesim":["image/jpeg"],"resource_type_tesim":["Audio"],"creator_tesim":["Hines, Ceyenne ran away from home multiple times, but she made the decision to leave for good around the age of fifteen. She eventually found her community, but it was a difficult place to discover. As an activist, Ceyenne has championed efforts to insert the neglected transgender identity into the national queer rights conversation. Always focusing on tomorrow, Ceyenne established the renowned Gays and Lesbians Living In A Transgender Society organization ( G.L.I.T.S.), which provides housing, transportation, and other support for transgender individuals seeking education and community."],"mime_type_tesim":["image/png"],"resource_type_tesim":["Moving image"],"creator_tesim":["Doroshow, Ceyenne","Mukerjee, Lucy"],"creator_ssim":["Doroshow, Ceyenne","Mukerjee, Lucy"],"contributor_tesim":["Ramos, Juan Raymundo"],"contributor_ssim":["Ramos, Juan Raymundo"],"rights_tesim":["In copyright"],"language_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-2/eng"],"based_near_tesim":["http://www.geonames.org/5110302","http://www.geonames.org/5139301","http://www.geonames.org/5108955"],"based_near_ssim":["http://www.geonames.org/5110302","http://www.geonames.org/5139301","http://www.geonames.org/5108955"],"isPartOf_ssim":["2b88qc34d"],"isMemberOf_ssim":["5425k9888"],"temporal_coverage_tesim":["1990~","1980~"],"genre_tesim":["Oral Histories"],"genre_ssim":["Oral Histories"],"flagged_tesim":["No explicit content"],"other_subject_tesim":["Flawless Sabrina","Ceyenne Doroshow","96 West","Andre's","Cooking in Heels: A Memoir","Gays and Lesbians Living In A Transgender Society ( G.L.I.T.S.)"],"other_subject_ssim":["Flawless Sabrina","Ceyenne Doroshow","96 West","Andre's","Cooking in Heels: A Memoir","Gays and Lesbians Living In A Transgender Society ( G.L.I.T.S.)"],"dta_other_subject_tesim":["96 West","Andre's","Ceyenne Doroshow","Cooking in Heels: A Memoir","Flawless Sabrina","Gays and Lesbians Living In A Transgender Society ( G.L.I.T.S.)"],"dta_subject_primary_searchable_tesim":["Black transgender people","LGBTQ+ sex workers","LGBTQ+ unhoused people","Trans women","Transgender activism","Transgender autobiographies","Transmisogynoir","96 West","Andre's","Ceyenne Doroshow","Cooking in Heels: A Memoir","Flawless Sabrina","Gays and Lesbians Living In A Transgender Society ( G.L.I.T.S.)"],"dta_subject_alt_searchable_tesim":["Sex workers (LGBTQ)","Transgender women","Transwomen","Trans-women","Transgender Black people","LGBTQ+ homeless people","LGBTQ+ houseless people","LGBTQ+ unsheltered people","Unhoused people (LGBT)","Transgender autobios","Transgender memoirs"],"date_start_dtsi":"2022-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_end_dtsi":"2022-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_created_search_ssim":["Feb February 25, 2022"],"date_temporal_search_ssim":["circa 1990","circa 1980"],"is_shown_at_tesim":["https://theoutwordsarchive.org/interview/ceyenne-doroshow/"],"is_shown_at_ssim":["https://theoutwordsarchive.org/interview/ceyenne-doroshow/"],"hosted_elsewhere_ssi":"1","language_label_ssim":["English"],"subject_geojson_facet_ssim":["{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-73.94958\",\"40.6501\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"Brooklyn\"}}","{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-74.04375\",\"41.11315\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"Spring Valley\"}}","{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-73.48207\",\"40.74427\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"Bethpage\"}}"],"subject_coordinates_geospatial":["40.6501,-73.94958","41.11315,-74.04375","40.74427,-73.48207"],"subject_geographic_hier_ssim":["New York||Kings County||Brooklyn","New York||Rockland||Town of Ramapo||Spring Valley","New York||Nassau||Town of Oyster Bay||Bethpage"],"subject_geographic_ssim":["Brooklyn","New York","Kings County","United States","Spring Valley","Rockland","Town of Ramapo","Bethpage","Nassau","Town of Oyster Bay"],"subject_geographic_tesim":["Brooklyn","New York","Kings County","United States","Spring Valley","Rockland","Town of Ramapo","Bethpage","Nassau","Town of Oyster Bay"],"has_thumbnail_ssi":"true","blacklight_display_ssi":"generic_file","has_file_content_ssi":"true","_version_":1842245181927063552,"timestamp":"2025-09-03T12:18:34.527Z","score":1.0},{"id":"sq87bt958","system_create_dtsi":"2022-09-15T21:09:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-12T15:37:36Z","date_uploaded_dtsi":"2022-09-15T21:09:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2022-09-15T21:09:44Z","model_ssi":"GenericFile","has_model_ssim":["GenericFile"],"date_created_tesim":["2022-09-15"],"date_created_ssim":["2022-09-15"],"visibility_ssi":"public","new_model_ssi":"GenericObject","dta_all_subject_ssim":["Latino/a/x LGBTQ+ people","Latino/a/x transgender people","LGBTQ+ unhoused people","Trans women"],"dta_other_subject_ssim":["Construction","Fran Reiter","Pier 54","Sylvia Rivera","Unhoused People"],"dta_homosaurus_subject_ssim":["Latino/a/x LGBTQ+ people","Latino/a/x transgender people","LGBTQ+ unhoused people","Trans women"],"date_issued_search_tesim":["Apr April 3, 1996"],"date_issued_display_ssim":["Apr. 3, 1996"],"dta_dates_ssim":["1996"],"dta_sortable_date_dtsi":"1996-04-03T00:00:00Z","ident_tesi":"sq87bt958","identifier_ssim":["sq87bt958"],"collection_name_ssim":["Marsha P. He also solely facilitated the Queer and Trans People of Color peer support group at the LGBT Life Center in Norfolk, Virginia, and co-facilitated the Transmasculine peer support group. In this oral history interview, Corprew discusses his upbringing and experiences of housing and financial instability, his time as a board member of TAP Virginia, the organization's mission, day-to-day operations, and importance to local transgender adults experiencing homelessness, the need for trans and LGBTQ organizations led by Black and Brown trans people, and the vital importance of mutual aid networks and community care for Black trans people. Additionally, he discusses his experience of being first a client of TAP Virginia before becoming a board member and key member of the organization, the impact of the summer's street uprisings in the Hampton Roads area, the need for increased visibility, awareness, and acceptance of trans people, and the paradox of increased visibility coinciding with the worsening struggles faced by Black and Her work includes fighting to ensure equity, equality and safety for the transgender community, especially Black transgender women. She has worked tirelessly in New Orleans to bring awareness to communities that have been adversely affected by laws and policies that are discriminatory, and serves on the LGBTQ Task Force which was created by New Orleans Mayor, LaToya Cantrell. She also works with the CANS Cant Stand campaign, which is a campaign that was created to bring awareness to and hopefully abolish the crimes against nature law that has historically targeted LGBTQ people of color, specifically Black transgender women. She was also selected as a Victory Empowerment Fellow, which identifies LGBTQ community members who wish to run for office and provides campaign training. In this oral history interview, Moore discusses her community organizing work among Black trans women in New Orleans, her experiences of growing up and living as a Black trans woman in the South, and her thoughts on trans politics, healing justice, and gentrification. Specifically, she details how her early life led her into movement work, the history of mutual aid and community safety among Black trans women in the South, the effects of Hurricane Katrina and gentrification on New Orleans, the need for healing spaces by and for Black trans women, and the changes she's seen in trans politics in the last ten years."],"mime_type_tesim":["image/jpeg"],"resource_type_tesim":["Moving image","Text"],"creator_tesim":["Moore, Mariah"],"creator_ssim":["Moore, Mariah"],"contributor_tesim":["Beam, Myrl","Billund-Phibbs, Myra"],"contributor_ssim":["Beam, Myrl","Billund-Phibbs, Myra"],"rights_tesim":["Copyright undetermined"],"publisher_tesim":["University of Minnesota Minneapolis Libraries"],"publisher_ssim":["University of Minnesota Minneapolis Libraries"],"language_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-2/eng"],"based_near_tesim":["http://www.geonames.org/4335045"],"based_near_ssim":["http://www.geonames.org/4335045"],"isPartOf_ssim":["2b88qc34d"],"isMemberOf_ssim":["vq27zn49p"],"genre_tesim":["Oral Histories","Transcriptions"],"genre_ssim":["Oral Histories","Transcriptions"],"flagged_tesim":["No explicit content"],"lcsh_subject_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85053952"],"lcsh_subject_ssim":["http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85053952"],"other_subject_tesim":["House of Tulip","LGBTQ Task Force","Black LGBTQ+ Migrant Project (BLMP)","Transgender Law Center (TLC)"],"other_subject_ssim":["House of Tulip","LGBTQ Task Force","Black LGBTQ+ Migrant Project (BLMP)","Transgender Law Center (TLC)"],"dta_other_subject_tesim":["Black LGBTQ+ Migrant Project (BLMP)","House of Tulip","LGBTQ Task Force","Transgender Law Center (TLC)"],"dta_subject_primary_searchable_tesim":["BIPOC","Black transgender people","Gentrification","LGBTQ+ communities","LGBTQ+ people of color","LGBTQ+ sex workers","LGBTQ+ unhoused people","Trans women","Transgender activism","Transphobia","Black LGBTQ+ Migrant Project (BLMP)","House of Tulip","LGBTQ Task Force","Transgender Law Center (TLC)"],"dta_subject_alt_searchable_tesim":["Sex workers (LGBTQ)","Transgender women","Transwomen","Trans-women","Communities (LGBTQ)","Transgender Black people","LGBTQ+ homeless people","LGBTQ+ houseless people","LGBTQ+ unsheltered people","Unhoused people (LGBT)","Black, Indigenous, and people of color","Black, Indigenous, and people of colour"],"date_start_dtsi":"2020-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_end_dtsi":"2020-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_created_search_ssim":["Jul July 6, 2020"],"is_shown_at_tesim":["https://umedia.lib.umn.edu/item/p16022coll97:207"],"is_shown_at_ssim":["https://umedia.lib.umn.edu/item/p16022coll97:207"],"hosted_elsewhere_ssi":"1","language_label_ssim":["English"],"subject_geojson_facet_ssim":["{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-90.07507\",\"29.95465\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"New Orleans\"}}"],"subject_coordinates_geospatial":["29.95465,-90.07507"],"subject_geographic_hier_ssim":["Louisiana||Orleans Parish||City of New Orleans||New Orleans"],"subject_geographic_ssim":["New Orleans","Louisiana","Orleans Parish","City of New Orleans","United States"],"subject_geographic_tesim":["New Orleans","Louisiana","Orleans Parish","City of New Orleans","United States"],"has_thumbnail_ssi":"true","blacklight_display_ssi":"generic_file","has_file_content_ssi":"true","_version_":1842245181149020160,"timestamp":"2025-09-03T12:18:33.785Z","score":1.0},{"id":"7m01bm02m","system_create_dtsi":"2023-04-11T21:30:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-12T06:50:38Z","date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-04-11T21:30:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2023-04-11T21:30:06Z","model_ssi":"GenericFile","has_model_ssim":["GenericFile"],"date_created_tesim":["2023-04-11"],"date_created_ssim":["2023-04-11"],"visibility_ssi":"public","new_model_ssi":"GenericObject","dta_altLabel_all_subject_ssim":["Women, Puerto Rican","Venezuelan Americans--United States"],"dta_all_subject_ssim":["Black transgender people","Detention of LGBTQ+ people under a hospital order","Drag queens","Gay men","HIV/AIDS","Latino/a/x transgender people","LGBTQ+ activism","LGBTQ+ chosen families","LGBTQ+ demonstrations","LGBTQ+ unhoused people","Puerto Rican women","QTPOC","Transfeminine people","Venezuelan Americans"],"dta_other_subject_ssim":["Gay Activists Alliance (GAA)","Hot Peaches","Marsha P. Dakota in 1953 (Sophia continues to use both names in different contexts and uses he/she/they pronouns). After high school, Sophia moved to San Francisco to study counseling psychology. Although San Francisco had been a sanctuary of free thought and expression for many LGBTQ+ young adults, Jon found the experience to be overwhelming. Sophia moved to Idaho and finally felt safe to dress in women’s clothes in the wilderness. Sophia worked as a librarian at the Challis Public Library, where she faced adversity due to her advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and gender identity, and was eventually fired.
