Sometime during her teen years, Beth experienced what she calls her first goddess vision: looking down at her chest, and seeing breasts. Around the same time, Beth began exploring San Francisco’s hippie culture, writing and performing folk music. In 1972, Beth applied to Stanford’s experimental sex reassignment surgery program. As the years passed, she began connecting with the bisexual community, where she felt more accepted than among the lesbian community. Bowers is the first woman with a lived trans experience to perform gender-affirming surgeries, and is one of the most prolific gender-affirming surgeons in the United States. In addition to her work, she has had a prominent media presence on trans issues, specifically issues around trans health care, for over two decades. In this oral history interview, Bowers discusses her upbringing in suburban Wisconsin and initial entry into medicine through obstetrics, the relationship between her initial forays into trans medicine and her personal transition, her education and surgical practice, and her thoughts on trans medical care, politics, theory, and the use of trans issues in the political arena. Specifically, she discusses her work under Dr. Biber and thoughts on being a trans practitioner, her practices in Colorado and California, transitioning and parenting, and her thoughts on trans athletics, autogynephilia theory, hormone replacement therapy and puberty blockers for adolescents and youth, the political and press uproar over such care, and WPATH's history, recent developments, Joan earned her PhD in biology from Harvard University and then started a professorship at Stanford University in 1972. When Joan first came out as transgender and publicly transitioned, she moved to San Francisco. There, she joined a predominantly queer congregation for a support system through her coming out process. Joan’s books, Evolution’s Rainbow and Genial Gene, challenged prevailing theories about the biology of gender and sexuality. Looking back on her research and career, Joan shows us that she contributed to LGBTQ+ activism by doing what she does best: scientific research. She reformed the science that has historically been used to pathologize queer identities, paving the way for scientists across gender and sexual Susan earned her PhD in United States history from University of California in Berkeley. While juggling parental and academic responsibilities, she was also exploring her identity in the queer dungeons and drag bars of San Francisco. By the end of her PhD in 1992, she decided to transition to female. While living in extreme poverty, Susan seized on her newfound freedom to explore academics, politics, and art on her own terms – what she refers to now as her “unpaid residency in transgender studies.” Susan eventually returned to academia and went on to become Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at University of Arizona, where she served for five years as Director of the Institute for LGBT Studies and founded the university’s Transgender Studies Initiative. Susan reflects on channeling her anger at the mistreatment of trans people into her life’s work of public storytelling. Through reshaping the public consciousness about gender in her research, teaching, and art, she seeks to create a safe and welcoming environment for future trans
