Sometime during her teen years, Beth experienced what she calls her first goddess vision: looking down at her chest, and seeing breasts. Around the same time, Beth began exploring San Francisco’s hippie culture, writing and performing folk music. In 1972, Beth applied to Stanford’s experimental sex reassignment surgery program. As the years passed, she began connecting with the bisexual community, where she felt more accepted than among the lesbian community. AT 20, Bradley opened his first downtown club in Lexington, KY with the help of his brother and sister. By the 1980’s, Bradley was Lexington’s leading drag queen. In 1991, Bradley moved to California. When he volunteered his design skills at an AIDS fundraiser, a local designer recognized Bradley’s talent and put him to work. Bradley quickly developed his own company, with clients ranging from Elton John to Barbra Streisand. In 2016, after 25 years in California, Bradley bought 40 acres in Meally, Kentucky, and moved back to be near his family. While mostly taking life a little easier now, Bradley continues to coordinate parties and events, and still dresses in drag on The city was segregated in his early childhood, and his parents were vocal advocates for the Black community. Charley struggled with mental health and addiction from a very young age; he estimates being admitted to psychiatric institutions over 70 times. Charley began transitioning at age 50, and since transitioning and getting sober his physical and mental health have improved significantly. Charley attended the all-male HBCU Morehouse College, currently serves on the LGBTQ Advisory Board for UVA, and is the board chair for Elia Chinó was born on April 24, 1962 in La Huacana, Michoacan, Mexico. In 1989, when she learned her best friend Gustavo had died in Mexico City of complications from AIDS. Elia began volunteering for the Houston AIDS Foundation. Elia also founded the Latin American Foundation Against AIDS. In 2013, it was renamed the Latin American Foundation for Social Action (Fundación Latino Americana de Accion Social, or FLAS). Her dedication to transgender-related data collection led her to work in HIV care for many years, including completing the Transgender Needs Assessment Survey (WTNAS), which she considers one of her greatest achievements. Her advocacy led to the establishment of trans-specific HIV care programs, making significant contributions to the health and well-being of transgender communities. In 1999 she became the first openly transgender artist to release a CD. Her work as an activist, scholar, and artist has garnered recognitions such as the Public Service Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex and the Distinguished Service Award from the Joan earned her PhD in biology from Harvard University and then started a professorship at Stanford University in 1972. When Joan first came out as transgender and publicly transitioned, she moved to San Francisco. There, she joined a predominantly queer congregation for a support system through her coming out process. Joan’s books, Evolution’s Rainbow and Genial Gene, challenged prevailing theories about the biology of gender and sexuality. Looking back on her research and career, Joan shows us that she contributed to LGBTQ+ activism by doing what she does best: scientific research. After she experienced extensive and violent harassment from her neighbors after coming out, Phyllis decided that with a law degree, she could protect both herself and others. In 1986, a closeted member of the military was slapped with a DWI after leaving a gay bar and needed a lawyer to keep his case out of the papers. With her fees from that case, Phyllis was able to launch her own practice in criminal defense and transgender law. From there, she went on to create the International Conference on Transgender Law and Employment Policy in 1991, and in 2010 she became the country’s first openly transgender Susan earned her PhD in United States history from University of California in Berkeley. While juggling parental and academic responsibilities, she was also exploring her identity in the queer dungeons and drag bars of San Francisco. By the end of her PhD in 1992, she decided to transition to female. While living in extreme poverty, Susan seized on her newfound freedom to explore academics, politics, and art on her own terms – what she refers to now as her “unpaid residency in transgender studies.” Susan eventually returned to academia and went on to become Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at University of Arizona, where she served for five years as Director of the Institute for LGBT Studies and founded the university’s Transgender Studies Initiative. Susan reflects on channeling her anger at the mistreatment of trans people into her life’s work of public storytelling. Through reshaping the public consciousness about gender in her research, teaching, and art, she seeks to create a safe and welcoming environment for future trans
