There is particularly substantive material on AIDS and AIDS treatments, \"the circuit\" culture, the Jewel Box Revue, and events organized by Piel, mainly as fundraisers for organizations such as the American Foundation for AIDS Research.","Candida Scott Piel was born on May 17, 1952, in New York, New York. She graduated from Yale University in 1974 with a B.A. in Religious Studies. She obtained a Masters Degree in communications from the New York Institute of Technology. After graduating from college, Piel worked briefly in the adult film industry and in gay theater. In 1982, she became involved in Gay Pride Day and chaired the rally in 1984. Piel then became executive director of Friends and Advocates for Individual Rights (FAIRPAC), a political action group. During the 1990s, Piel worked for the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR) for which she was liaison to the gay community and organized fundraisers and events for AIDS awareness and safe partying. The images are crafted using the digital equivalents of photography, stage makeup, and cosmetic surgery.","Matthew Charles Rosenblum was born on June 7, 1947, in New Jersey. His interest in photography began when he was eight years old, and by age 16 he amassed an extensive collection of United States national parks images. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1970, and then earned an advanced degree in psychology from the New School for Social Research. Between 1974 and 1977, he took month-long photographic explorations in the Andes and Amazonas and Southeast Asia. In 1978, he met John Piazza, and for the next twenty-two years they traveled extensively in the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia where Rosenblum captured expressions of culture and lifestyle in his portraits of the locals. Beginning in 2000, they became seasonal residents of Cherry Grove on Fire Island, New York, where they started to go by the name of The Hoffas. The name originated from Rosenblum's adoption of Gimmi Hoffa as his nom-de-caméra and the local lore that Jimmy Hoffa, the Teamster leader, was in a federal witness protection program and living in Cherry Grove. Rosenblum's photographs are exhibited in homes and business establishments in Cherry Grove. He finished his degree at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida, and has worked as a business analyst, math teacher, and health educator focusing on gay youth and communities of color. He attended Glenville High School in Cleveland, and took drama classes under the future Hollywood producer Ross Hunter. At age 17, he began studying dance with Edward Caton, and later danced for several seasons with the Cleveland Ballet. Impressed with his artistic abilities, his art teachers formed a small private scholarship to enable him to attend the Western Reserve University School of Art in Cleveland. In 1940, Brastoff moved to New York where he designed window displays for Macy's and joined the Clay Club, where in 1941 he held a one-man show of his terra cotta \"whimsies\". In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army Air Force, where he designed costumes and scenery for Special Services events to entertain the troops; he also appeared on stage, and became well known for his comic interpretation of Carmen Miranda. In 1944, Brastoff moved to California, where he signed a seven-year contract with 20th Century Fox as a designer and entertainer. In 1947, he opened his first ceramic plant in Los Angeles, selling hand-painted earthenware. In 1952, with backing from Winthrop Rockefeller, Brastoff opened a new factory in Los Angeles. It was destroyed by fire six months later, and in 1953, Brastoff opened a new 35,000-square foot factory and showroom that eventually employed more than 100 people. In 1960, the business began to decline, and in 1962 Brastoff suffered a nervous collapse and left the company, which continued to sell wares under his name until it finally closed in 1973. After several years away from business, Brastoff returned in 1966 with a one-man show of metal sculpture at the Dalzell Hatfield Galleries in Los Angeles. He thereafter designed and produced lines for ceramic, jewelry, and decorative arts companies. As his health declined after 1985, he increasingly curtailed his artistic activities.
