The collection primarily consists of correspondence, topical files, reports, meeting minutes, legal research, litigation and amicus files, publications, volunteer and training manuals, and news clippings created or maintained by GLAD. The records document all aspects of the organization, including its history, structure, and activities from its founding in 1978 to the present. The collection provides a rich resource for the study of GLAD, anti-discrimination efforts, and the legal issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and people with HIV in the United States.
Material on GLAD’s founding and history are found in the collection, as is material related to the administration of the organization. The Board of Directors and Executive Director files include committee reports, a complete set of meeting minutes and packets, correspondence, and topical files providing a rich overview of GLAD’s activities. Financial records consist of auditor, public charity, and general budget reports, which provide information about GLAD’s financial status and growth over the years. Legal files consist of reports and litigation and amicus files, documenting only a few of the cases in which GLAD was involved. The Public Affairs files provide substantive information which can be used to reconstruct GLAD’s history and more generally the history of the legal status of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and people with HIV in the United States. Of particular note are GLAD’s publications and the news clippings they maintained. The Education files include documentation on GLAD’s educational and outreach missions, including its Lawyer Referral Service, InfoLine (a phone based guidance and referral service), forums, and presentations. The Development files document fundraising. In addition to the records generated by GLAD, the collection includes a substantial number of newsletters, flyers, and brochures (Non-GLAD Publications) of various local and national lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender organizations (usually only a few items per organization). While not comprehensive, the non-GLAD publications provide a glimpse of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender activist milieu primarily from the 1980s and 1990s.
application/pdf
Text
Yale University Library Manuscripts and Archives
Yale University Library Manuscripts and Archives
Caldera, Mary","Jackson, Derek","Gualtier, Susan
Caldera, Mary","Jackson, Derek","Gualtier, Susan
Copyright undetermined
http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-2/eng
http://www.geonames.org/8502102
http://www.geonames.org/8502102
rr171x52v
rb68xb92m
1973/2014
Finding Aids
Finding Aids
No explicit content
Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD)
Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD)
Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD)
http://homosaurus.org/terms/bisexuals
http://homosaurus.org/terms/bisexuals
Anti-discrimination law","Bisexuals","Gay men","HIV/AIDS","Lesbians","Transgender people","Transsexual people","Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD)
bisexual people","Gays
["May May 2011","Oct October 2014
1973 to 2014
0
English
{"type":"Feature","geometry":{"type":"Point","coordinates":["-70.3064","44.2056"]},"properties":{"placename":"New England Region"}}
44.2056,-70.3064
New England Region
New England Region","United States
New England Region","United States
["http://hdl.handle.net/10079/fa/mssa.ms.1961
["GenericFile
2016-06-15
2016-06-15
["Crossdressing","Drag kings","Drag queens","Transgender community","Transgender people
Laura Bailey
Crossdressing","Drag kings","Drag queens","Transgender community","Transgender people
Sep September 2011","2014
1850 to 2013
Sep. 2011","2014
1850 to 2013
2011","2014
["5712m658s
Discovery Resources
Yale University Libraries
Yale University Libraries
kjrawson@holycross.edu
kjrawson@holycross.edu
Guide to the Laura Bailey Collection of Gender and Transgender Materials
Guide to the Laura Bailey Collection of Gender and Transgender Materials
Guide to the Laura Bailey Collection of Gender and Transgender Materials
The Laura Bailey Collection of Gender and Transgender Materials consists of a broad range of visual materials, including photographs, postcards, and many types of printed ephemera; manuscript materials, and audiovisual materials. The collection is organized largely as it was received from Bailey, with many materials in binders according to category of gender or transgender culture or performance as assigned by Bailey. Also included is a catalog for the collection compiled by Bailey and the hand-written index cards she used to catalog it.
The collection has been cataloged in two groups. The printed component, comprised of books, magazines, newsletters, and a variety of printed ephemera, is in the process of being cataloged in the Yale Library’s online catalog. The archival component is described in brief in this finding aid. More detailed descriptions will be added in the future. The collection catalog and index cards detail the contents of the entire collection, including the printed component.
The first piece Laura Bailey bought in the 1960's was a digest entitled "Muscle Man in Silks" about a body builder who "had a weakness for women's silk lingerie." She went on to gather, widely and internationally, any material that exhibited or commented on gender variation: photographs, postcards, flyers and programs for night clubs, sheet music, and clippings. These cover a wide range of gender expression, from drag queens and kings to cowgirls and bearded ladies. This finding aids lists materials as received from Laura Bailey – most of them gathered into thematic groups in scrapbooks and photo albums.","As a natural born lifetime collector of the ephemeral, Laura Bailey has bought and sold, as both a collector and a rare book and rare paper collectibles dealer professionally in the international markets. In addition to real life experience, Laura's academic credentials include New York University and The New School for Social Research.
Her life experiences included touring in a band as a multitalented musician - (trumpet, organ, all keyboard instruments, and electronic music),- working in the hospitality industry as both manager and owner of a resort hotel in Eastern Long Island, and owning a bookstore in New York City's historic Greenwich Village. Laura Bailey was a conscientious activist even before Stonewall in 1969, and remains a staunch supporter of Human Rights today. Laura's expansive varied collections have included beat poetry, original 20th Century art, Mayan art, stamps, and erotica. Laura continues her passions for collecting materials reflective of cultural diversity, societal taboos, and those discriminated against, ignored, persecuted and forgotten. Laura's current collection in inventory and sheer numbers ranges in the hundreds of thousands.
application/pdf
Text
Yale University Library Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library
Yale University Library Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library
Golden, Leigh","Rush, Michael
Golden, Leigh","Rush, Michael
Copyright undetermined
http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-2/eng
rr171x52v
rb68xb92m
1850/2013
Finding Aids
Finding Aids
No explicit content
Laura Bailey
Laura Bailey
Laura Bailey
Crossdressing","Drag kings","Drag queens","Transgender community","Transgender people","Laura Bailey
["Sep September 2011","2014
1850 to 2013
0
English
["http://hdl.handle.net/10079/fa/beinecke.lbailey
["GenericFile
2016-06-16
2016-06-16
["Emancipation","Same-sex marriage","Transgender people
Anne Stanback","Love Makes a Family
Emancipation","Same-sex marriage","Transgender people"],"dta_homosaurus_v1_subject_ssim":["Emancipation
Jan January 2011
1991 to 2010
Jan. 2011
1991 to 2010
2011
["zc77sq21g
Discovery Resources
Yale University Libraries
Yale University Libraries
kjrawson@holycross.edu
kjrawson@holycross.edu
Guide to the Love Makes a Family Records
Guide to the Love Makes a Family Records
Guide to the Love Makes a Family Records
The Love Makes a Family (LMF) records consist of email correspondence, bylaws, reports, meeting minutes, research data, publications, Web pages, social media account files, topical files, interviews and testimonies, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and newspaper clippings documenting the history, structure, and activities of LMF, Inc. and its related organizations, the LMF Political Action Committee (PAC) and the LMF Foundation.
