The collection, which contains materials dating from approximately 1954 to 1961, is comprised largely of black-and-white photographs of drag artists and of performances staged by the Carroll Revue, including images of various international venues. Prints of performers are mostly studio portraits, proofs, and other publicity shots created by professional photographers, with the majority of images representing Carroll Wallace and a fewer number depicting other members of the Revue, such as Bobby Lane, Guy Doran, and Les-Lee. Portraits of other female impersonators, some of whom are identified, are also included in the collection, although their precise association with the Carroll Revue is unknown. In addition to photographic documentation, the collection contains a small amount of printed material, including a press clipping and two announcements in French about a performance by Carroll Wallace as “Guilda” at the Théâtre National in Montreal, Canada, and a Carroll Revue brochure. Correspondence is limited to a single item: an undated letter from Juan José to Carroll Wallace briefly describing a book about “Boy-lesque.”","The Carroll Revue, the subject of this collection, was a California-based performance troupe of female impersonators founded by drag artist Carroll Wallace in or around 1954. Wallace, who began performing in drag on Hollywood’s famed Sunset Strip, assembled and headed the stage show with the help of his wife Ruth, who acted as the show’s producer. Also known as the Carroll Wallace Follies and the Carroll Wallace Show, the Revue involved a number of performers—singers, dancers, and comedians—who took to the stage in a variety of female guises, donning an array of costumes. Members of the Revue included such performers as Bobby Lane, Guy Doran, Jackie Phillips, Russell Reed, Ray Saunders, and Les-Lee. The Carroll Revue traveled widely from its home base in the San Francisco Bay area, performing at such international venues as the Grand Opera House in Manila, Philippines, the Tivoli Circuit in Sydney, Australia, and the Latin Quarter in Tokyo, Japan. The well-known San Francisco night spot featuring acts by female impersonators, Finocchio’s, was also a regular stop on the Revue’s itinerary, along with such venues in the western United States as the Tropics Room in Portland, Oregon, the Rendezvous Club in Fairbanks, Alaska, and the Blue Note Night Club in Honolulu, Hawaii. When not performing with the Revue, Carroll Wallace appeared on stage as an emcee at Finocchio’s."],"mime_type_tesim":["application/pdf"],"resource_type_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Yale University Library Manuscripts and Archives"],"creator_ssim":["Yale University Library Manuscripts and Archives"],"contributor_tesim":["Noruschat, Suzanne"],"contributor_ssim":["Noruschat, Suzanne"],"rights_tesim":["Copyright undetermined"],"language_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-2/eng"],"based_near_tesim":["http://www.geonames.org/5332921"],"based_near_ssim":["http://www.geonames.org/5332921"],"isPartOf_ssim":["rr171x52v"],"isMemberOf_ssim":["rb68xb92m"],"temporal_coverage_tesim":["1954~/1961~"],"genre_tesim":["Finding Aids"],"genre_ssim":["Finding Aids"],"flagged_tesim":["No explicit content"],"other_subject_tesim":["Carroll Wallace","The Carroll Revue"],"other_subject_ssim":["Carroll Wallace","The Carroll Revue"],"dta_other_subject_tesim":["Carroll Wallace","The Carroll Revue"],"dta_subject_primary_searchable_tesim":["Drag queens","Carroll Wallace","The Carroll Revue"],"date_start_dtsi":"2012-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_end_dtsi":"2012-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_created_search_ssim":["Mar March 2012"],"date_temporal_search_ssim":["circa 1954 to circa 1961"],"hosted_elsewhere_ssi":"0","language_label_ssim":["English"],"subject_geojson_facet_ssim":["{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-119.75126\",\"37.25022\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"California\"}}"],"subject_coordinates_geospatial":["37.25022,-119.75126"],"subject_geographic_hier_ssim":["California"],"subject_geographic_ssim":["California","United States"],"subject_geographic_tesim":["California","United States"],"has_thumbnail_ssi":"true","blacklight_display_ssi":"generic_file","has_file_content_ssi":"true","related_url_tesim":["http://hdl.handle.net/10079/fa/mssa.ms.1983"],"_version_":1860198032139616256,"timestamp":"2026-03-20T16:11:26.681Z","score":1.0},{"id":"xw42n796z","system_create_dtsi":"2016-01-27T20:37:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2026-03-18T09:16:44Z","date_uploaded_dtsi":"2016-01-27T20:37:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2016-01-27T20:37:15Z","model_ssi":"GenericFile","has_model_ssim":["GenericFile"],"date_created_tesim":["2016-01-27"],"date_created_ssim":["2016-01-27"],"visibility_ssi":"public","new_model_ssi":"GenericObject","dta_all_subject_ssim":["Crossdressers","Crossdressing"],"dta_homosaurus_subject_ssim":["Crossdressers","Crossdressing"],"date_created_search_tesim":["2012"],"date_temporal_search_tesim":["1974 to 2001"],"date_created_display_ssim":["2012"],"date_temporal_display_ssim":["1974 to 2001"],"dta_dates_ssim":["2012"],"dta_sortable_date_dtsi":"2012-01-01T00:00:00Z","ident_tesi":"xw42n796z","identifier_ssim":["xw42n796z"],"collection_name_ssim":["Discovery Resources"],"institution_name_ssim":["California State University, Northridge"],"primary_institution_ssi":"California State University, Northridge","depositor_ssim":["kjrawson@holycross.edu"],"depository_tesim":["kjrawson@holycross.edu"],"title_tesim":["Guide to the Cross Dressing Newsletters Collection, 1974-2001"],"title_ssim":["Guide to the Cross Dressing Newsletters Collection, 1974-2001"],"label_tesim":["Guide to the Cross Dressing Newsletters Collection, 1974-2001"],"description_tesim":["This collection consists of newsletters issued by local chapters of Tri-Ess (an educational and support group for heterosexual cross dressers) in the United States, and independent groups in the US and abroad. Ed Wood's fiction is as strange, idiosyncratic and out of step with his times and mores as his infamous movies. His novels inter-splice erotic segments with lengthy philosophical, sociological and psychological discourse. Rudolph Grey's biography \"Nightmare of Ecstasy: The Life and Art of Edward D. Wood, Jr.\" (1992) and Tim Burton's biopic \"Ed Wood,\" which earned two Academy Awards, brought attention to his life and work. He died in 1978 of an alcohol-induced heart attack and has since achieved cult status.","Pulp novels written anonymously and under various pseudonyms of the legendary psycho-sexual author and film-maker, Ed Wood, Jr., collected by pulp scholar Robert Legault (1950 to 2008). In addition, magazines, reference materials, posters and other ephemera. Also, an original one sheet poster for the 1953 film, \"Glen or Glenda?\" directed by Ed Wood, Jr. in his feature film debut. Originally titled \"I Changed My Sex,\" the film has maintained a solid cult following over the decades despite its poor reviews due to Wood's decidedly distinctive style and z-budget production values. The aim of the film's producer, George Weiss, was to capitalize on the story Christina Jorgensen, who in 1952 became the first man widely known to undergo sex reassignment surgery. The film's first half guides the viewer down a crooked path that includes multiple narration techniques, BDSM (bondage/discipline/sadomasochist) pornography, and a buffalo stampede in order to convey a story about a man named Glen who wishes to become a transvestite, struggling to gain acceptance from his girlfriend. The second half, added largely at the demand of the distributor to include sex change in the content, is about a pseudohermaphrodite named Alan who fights his way through World War II in women's underwear, finally returning from the conflict to have the surgery he/she has always desired."],"mime_type_tesim":["application/pdf"],"resource_type_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections, Cornell University Library"],"creator_ssim":["Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections, Cornell University Library"],"rights_tesim":["Copyright undetermined"],"language_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-2/eng"],"isPartOf_ssim":["rr171x52v"],"isMemberOf_ssim":["d746aead-f3e5-4b12-956c-af09ad6e82a9"],"temporal_coverage_tesim":["1966/2006"],"genre_tesim":["Finding Aids"],"genre_ssim":["Finding Aids"],"flagged_tesim":["No explicit content"],"other_subject_tesim":["Edward Wood"],"other_subject_ssim":["Edward Wood"],"dta_other_subject_tesim":["Edward Wood"],"homosaurus_subject_tesim":["http://homosaurus.org/terms/drag"],"homosaurus_subject_ssim":["http://homosaurus.org/terms/drag"],"dta_subject_primary_searchable_tesim":["Crossdressing","Drag","Edward Wood"],"dta_subject_alt_searchable_tesim":[""],"date_start_dtsi":"2012-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_end_dtsi":"2012-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_created_search_ssim":["2012"],"date_temporal_search_ssim":["1966 to 2006"],"hosted_elsewhere_ssi":"0","language_label_ssim":["English"],"has_thumbnail_ssi":"true","blacklight_display_ssi":"generic_file","has_file_content_ssi":"true","related_url_tesim":["http://rmc.library.cornell.edu/EAD/htmldocs/RMM07779.html"],"_version_":1860198030159904768,"timestamp":"2026-03-20T16:11:24.792Z","score":1.0},{"id":"sj139192w","system_create_dtsi":"2015-12-08T20:06:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2026-03-18T23:24:19Z","date_uploaded_dtsi":"2015-12-08T20:06:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2015-12-08T20:06:29Z","model_ssi":"GenericFile","has_model_ssim":["GenericFile"],"date_created_tesim":["2015-12-08"],"date_created_ssim":["2015-12-08"],"visibility_ssi":"public","new_model_ssi":"GenericObject","dta_altLabel_all_subject_ssim":["bodybuilding","bodysculpting","Male photography","Male physique photography","Photography of the male","Physical culture photography","Physique photography","Gay eroticism","Gay male erotica","Gay male eroticism","Gay men's erotica","Body building","Body sculpting (Bodybuilding)","Bodysculpting (Bodybuilding)","Physique","Nude photography"],"dta_all_subject_ssim":["Body building","Bodybuilding","Drag","Gay erotica","Gay men","Photography of men","Photography of the nude"],"dta_other_subject_ssim":["Bruce of Los Angeles","Harry Weintraub"],"dta_homosaurus_subject_ssim":["Body building","Drag","Gay men"],"dta_homosaurus_v1_subject_ssim":["Body building","Drag"],"dta_lcsh_subject_ssim":["Bodybuilding","Gay erotica","Photography of men","Photography of the nude"],"date_created_search_tesim":["2012"],"date_temporal_search_tesim":["1850 to 2010"],"date_created_display_ssim":["2012"],"date_temporal_display_ssim":["1850 to 2010"],"dta_dates_ssim":["2012"],"dta_sortable_date_dtsi":"2012-01-01T00:00:00Z","ident_tesi":"sj139192w","identifier_ssim":["sj139192w"],"collection_name_ssim":["Discovery Resources"],"institution_name_ssim":["Human Sexuality Collection, Cornell University"],"primary_institution_ssi":"Human Sexuality Collection, Cornell University","depositor_ssim":["kjrawson@holycross.edu"],"depository_tesim":["kjrawson@holycross.edu"],"title_tesim":["Guide to the Harry H.
