Digital copies of drawings found in the analogue files, and digital images for which there is no corresponding analogue image are found on 17 CDs. The collection also includes some material from Burman’s later life unrelated to Barbara Jean and the crossdressing community. She was bullied in her youth and then went on to join the U.S. Navy. but was dishonorably discharged after coming out as gay. These files detail her experiences as an HIV/AIDS survivor and activist, fundraising through drag performances. She was also recognized by former president Barack Obama for her services to the transgender community, especially in the Tenderloin. Also included are images of Felicia in slideshow format. Like many autobiographical fragments in Elizondo's collection, this material consists of isolated pages from published and unpublished sources which were found together.\r\n\r\nThis item comes from the Felicia “Flames” Elizondo papers (#2021-06) at the GLBT Historical Society. Felicia Elizondo, who performed as Felicia Flames, was a Chicana trans woman and drag queen associated with San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. She was a regular at Gene Compton's Cafeteria at the time of the Compton's Cafeteria Riot, a historic 1966 uprising by trans and queer people. Elizondo performed for many years at Aunt Charlie's Lounge alongside her close friend Vicki Marlane. Raised in Beverly Hills, California, he went to UCLA Medical School in the 1950s. Pauly interned in surgery, but decided to try a residency at Cornell Medical Center in New York. It was during a consultation rotation in 1961 that he met his first transgender person. He tells how little literature there was on the subject at the time. He notes how the terminology has evolved over time. He wrote a paper about it, which was published in 1965. In 1962 he came to University of Oregon Medical School (UOMS, now Oregon Health \u0026 Science University) where group therapy was practiced. He stayed there until 1978, when he became Chair at University of Nevada Medical School until 1995. He taught abroad and ran an adult mental health clinic in Reno. Dr. Pauly is also notable in trans circles for his series of videotaped interviews with activist Lou Sullivan.
