At 17, hoping to put his complex gender feelings to rest, Charles joined the Navy, which was at least useful for adventure. When Crystal’s mother died in 1985, Charles finally went away completely. It took almost another decade for Crystal to learn there was a name for what she’d been feeling her whole life: transgender. Crystal joined and became president of the Gulf Gender Alliance and formed coalitions with other LGBTQ organizations in New Orleans. Julie is a proud grandmother, Presbyterian church elder, and public speaker. She married her wife Joanne in 1972 and is an ordained Baptist minister who worked in the ministry for 20 years before moving on to higher education. In 2003, Julie came out to her wife as transgender. Joanne decided that she loved “the person, and not the package,\" and that she would stay with her spouse no matter what. In 2005, when she came out at work as Julie, the Spring Arbor University fired her. Julie filed a federal discrimination complaint, and eventually settled with her former employer. Since then, she has served as executive director of Michigan Equality, and on the national boards of both Soulforce and PFLAG, while Joanne works as a psychotherapist with a focus on transgender issues. Julie and Joanne often travel together to speaking engagements, where they talk about the surprises and enduring love of their 46-year After co-producing AfterHours, a radio program about human sexuality, Ladyboy Gigi created an iTunes podcast called Adult Bedtime Stories. Gigi has also served on BiNet USA’s board of directors, and helped established Celebrate Bisexuality Day in 1999. That year, Ladyboy Gigi was awarded the AIB Globe Award for outstanding service to the bisexual community worldwide. After she experienced extensive and violent harassment from her neighbors after coming out, Phyllis decided that with a law degree, she could protect both herself and others. In 1986, a closeted member of the military was slapped with a DWI after leaving a gay bar and needed a lawyer to keep his case out of the papers. With her fees from that case, Phyllis was able to launch her own practice in criminal defense and transgender law. From there, she went on to create the International Conference on Transgender Law and Employment Policy in 1991, and in 2010 she became the country’s first openly transgender In 2005, Shannon received the Ford Foundation’s Leadership for a Changing World Award. In 2009, California Lawyer named him one of their California Lawyers of the Year.
