She recognized she was bisexual in her early teens. Her family was accepting of her sexuality very early on. Before enlisted in the military in her early twenties, she married her first wife, Helga. Due to mental health issues, Helga and Antoinette divorced. Antoinette then married her second wife, Emily, and went on to have two children.\r\n\r\nIt was not until Antoinette was divorced from Emily that she started dressing as a woman. In her early fifties she had a conversation with Jean Vermette that first gave language to Antoinette; transgender. This language molded her own version of her gender. She was bullied in her youth and then went on to join the U.S. Navy. but was dishonorably discharged after coming out as gay. These files detail her experiences as an HIV/AIDS survivor and activist, fundraising through drag performances. She was also recognized by former president Barack Obama for her services to the transgender community, especially in the Tenderloin. Also included are images of Felicia in slideshow format. Like many autobiographical fragments in Elizondo's collection, this material consists of isolated pages from published and unpublished sources which were found together.\r\n\r\nThis item comes from the Felicia “Flames” Elizondo papers (#2021-06) at the GLBT Historical Society. Felicia Elizondo, who performed as Felicia Flames, was a Chicana trans woman and drag queen associated with San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. She was a regular at Gene Compton's Cafeteria at the time of the Compton's Cafeteria Riot, a historic 1966 uprising by trans and queer people. Elizondo performed for many years at Aunt Charlie's Lounge alongside her close friend Vicki Marlane. This collection contains Elizondo's writings, photographs of her and her community, ephemera she collected about local drag and queer topics, and materials about Marlane and her her kids, Dr. Rusty Mae Moore and Chelsea Goodwin opened their home to homeless trans folk. Transy House, as it was called, aimed to be a place where trans people could feel safe from the objectification and harassment. To this day, the continue to live with other trans folks on Long Island, where they've discovered and forged new community affinities. In this interview Chelsea Goodwin speaks passionately of Goth and Pagan culture's relationship to Trans Community as being like \"peanut butter and jelly\". A seasoned activist, having worked with Act Up, Queer Nation and Dyke Action Machine, her piss-and-vinegar vibrancy emphasizes social change from the ground up, rather than legislative reform. Dr. Rusty Mae Moore came out in her 50's and through parenting, her career and travel to Brazil navigated the particularities of her own transition.
