She was also recognized by former president Barack Obama for her services to the transgender community, especially in the Tenderloin. Also included are images of Felicia in slideshow format. Like many autobiographical fragments in Elizondo's collection, this material consists of isolated pages from published and unpublished sources which were found together.\r\n\r\nThis item comes from the Felicia “Flames” Elizondo papers (#2021-06) at the GLBT Historical Society. Felicia Elizondo, who performed as Felicia Flames, was a Chicana trans woman and drag queen associated with San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. She was a regular at Gene Compton's Cafeteria at the time of the Compton's Cafeteria Riot, a historic 1966 uprising by trans and queer people. Elizondo performed for many years at Aunt Charlie's Lounge alongside her close friend Vicki Marlane. Hernandez and several of his friends were female impersonators, so the majority of the photographs are of men in various states of drag. Others show Hernandez surrounded by his friends and family or in affectionate embraces with gay male friends. Also present are ticket stubs, matchbook covers, night club flyers, programs, postcards, and clippings, mostly having to do with performance venues and gay clubs in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Antonio, and Kansas City, as well as with famous performers. They also document Hernandez's interest in Broadway shows, jazz, and actors and actresses. Laid-in are several U.S. Army personnel documents from Hernandez's work at the San Antonio General Depot 1951-1954; in addition, there are two photographs of Hernandez in uniform. Also laid-in are several other photographs, clippings, and programs. Photograph album has been disbound for conservation purposes. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture and the Archive of Documentary Phoenix also chronicles the evolution of their non-binary trans identity, influenced by their relationships with various queer and trans communities as well as their own political engagement. They trace the steps of this political development, from their initial exposure to organizing as a college student through their participation in the campaign to establish a union at Babeland in New York City. They describe the worker grievances at Babeland, the process of building support for a union, the personal and community relationships that sustained their organizing, and worker solidarity efforts within the broader labor movement. After she experienced extensive and violent harassment from her neighbors after coming out, Phyllis decided that with a law degree, she could protect both herself and others. In 1986, a closeted member of the military was slapped with a DWI after leaving a gay bar and needed a lawyer to keep his case out of the papers. With her fees from that case, Phyllis was able to launch her own practice in criminal defense and transgender law. From there, she went on to create the International Conference on Transgender Law and Employment Policy in 1991, and in 2010 she became the country’s first openly transgender In 2005, Shannon received the Ford Foundation’s Leadership for a Changing World Award. In 2009, California Lawyer named him one of their California Lawyers of the Year. In 2016 he secured an injunction to stop President Trump’s proposed ban on transgender people in the military. Today, Shannon serves as legal director for NCLR and on the boards of Faith in America and the Transgender Law \u0026 Policy
