He has served on the board of directors of Borealis Philanthropy and the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, and was a grantmaking panel member for the Saguaro Fund of the Funding Exchange. He is also an independent filmmaker. In this oral history interview, Alex discusses the beginnings of his political and community work in San Francisco Bay Area trans organizations in the late 1990s, the founding of TGIJP, and the In this conversation with AJ Lewis, Sandy describes accessing hormones and surgery in the 1970s, the different groups she was involved with, including United Transvestites Transsexual Society, Transsexual Action Organization, and organizing the first Fantasia Fair. She also shares her extensive knowledge of early trans print culture, based on her experience working at Neptune Productions, where she wrote articles, advice, and fiction for a variety of trans and queer publications in the 1970s. In addition, she discusses becoming a nurse during the AIDS crisis, how trans healthcare has changed, and her experiences as a
