Elia Chinó was born on April 24, 1962 in La Huacana, Michoacan, Mexico. In 1989, when she learned her best friend Gustavo had died in Mexico City of complications from AIDS. Elia began volunteering for the Houston AIDS Foundation. Elia also founded the Latin American Foundation Against AIDS. In 2013, it was renamed the Latin American Foundation for Social Action (Fundación Latino Americana de Accion Social, or FLAS). FLAS expanded to provide HIV and Hepatitis C counseling and testing, mental health treatment, social services support, and more."],"mime_type_tesim":["image/jpeg"],"resource_type_tesim":["Moving Her father founded the New York Buddhist Church in 1938 and Hoshina buried questions about her gender identity under the pressure to “set an example” as the minister’s son. After years of therapy, Hoshina underwent gender affirming surgery at the age of 70. To her relief, the Buddhist church and study center were accepting of her change.
