She was bullied in her youth and then went on to join the U.S. Navy. but was dishonorably discharged after coming out as gay. These files detail her experiences as an HIV/AIDS survivor and activist, fundraising through drag performances. She was also recognized by former president Barack Obama for her services to the transgender community, especially in the Tenderloin. Also included are images of Felicia in slideshow format. Like many autobiographical fragments in Elizondo's collection, this material consists of isolated pages from published and unpublished sources which were found together.\r\n\r\nThis item comes from the Felicia “Flames” Elizondo papers (#2021-06) at the GLBT Historical Society. Felicia Elizondo, who performed as Felicia Flames, was a Chicana trans woman and drag queen associated with San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. She was a regular at Gene Compton's Cafeteria at the time of the Compton's Cafeteria Riot, a historic 1966 uprising by trans and queer people. Elizondo performed for many years at Aunt Charlie's Lounge alongside her close friend Vicki Marlane. This collection contains Elizondo's writings, photographs of her and her community, ephemera she collected about local drag and queer topics, and materials about Marlane and her legacy."],"mime_type_tesim":["application/pdf"],"resource_type_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Elizondo, Felicia"],"creator_ssim":["Elizondo, Felicia"],"rights_tesim":["In copyright"],"language_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-2/eng"],"based_near_tesim":["http://www.geonames.org/5392171","http://www.geonames.org/12217947","http://www.geonames.org/5530022","http://www.geonames.org/5393021"],"based_near_ssim":["http://www.geonames.org/5392171","http://www.geonames.org/12217947","http://www.geonames.org/5530022","http://www.geonames.org/5393021"],"isPartOf_ssim":["xs55mc49j"],"isMemberOf_ssim":["b91dbe86-4192-4c77-b1fc-d1c323b21c8b"],"date_issued_tesim":["2010~/2021"],"genre_tesim":["Autobiographies"],"genre_ssim":["Autobiographies"],"flagged_tesim":["No explicit content"],"other_subject_tesim":["Compton's Cafeteria Riots"],"other_subject_ssim":["Compton's Cafeteria Riots"],"dta_other_subject_tesim":["Compton's Cafeteria Riots"],"dta_subject_primary_searchable_tesim":["Chicano/a/x LGBTQ+ people","Chicano/a/x transgender people","Drag queens","Latino/a/x LGBTQ+ people","Latino/a/x transgender people","Trans women","Transgender people in the military","Compton's Cafeteria Riots"],"date_start_dtsi":"2010-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_end_dtsi":"2021-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_issued_search_ssim":["circa 2010 to 2021"],"hosted_elsewhere_ssi":"0","language_label_ssim":["English"],"subject_geojson_facet_ssim":["{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-121.89496\",\"37.33939\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"San Jose\"}}","{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-122.41744\",\"37.78394\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"Tenderloin\"}}","{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-100.43704\",\"31.46377\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"San Angelo\"}}","{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-121.69627\",\"37.23249\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"Santa Clara\"}}"],"subject_coordinates_geospatial":["37.33939,-121.89496","37.78394,-122.41744","31.46377,-100.43704","37.23249,-121.69627"],"subject_geographic_hier_ssim":["California||Santa Clara County||San Jose","California||San Francisco County||Tenderloin","Texas||Tom Green||San Angelo","California||Santa Clara"],"subject_geographic_ssim":["San Jose","California","Santa Clara County","United States","Tenderloin","San Francisco County","San Angelo","Texas","Tom Green","Santa Clara"],"subject_geographic_tesim":["San Jose","California","Santa Clara County","United States","Tenderloin","San Francisco County","San Angelo","Texas","Tom Green","Santa Clara"],"has_thumbnail_ssi":"true","blacklight_display_ssi":"generic_file","has_file_content_ssi":"true","_version_":1862578998296444928,"timestamp":"2026-04-15T22:55:52.953Z","score":1.0},{"id":"9880vr27z","system_create_dtsi":"2023-05-11T16:54:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-09-02T19:07:27Z","date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-05-11T16:54:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2023-05-11T16:54:37Z","model_ssi":"GenericFile","has_model_ssim":["GenericFile"],"date_created_tesim":["2023-05-11"],"date_created_ssim":["2023-05-11"],"visibility_ssi":"public","new_model_ssi":"GenericObject","dta_altLabel_all_subject_ssim":["Christianity--19th century"],"dta_all_subject_ssim":["AIDS activists","AIDS education","Christianity","Latino/a/x LGBTQ+ people","QTPOC","Trans women","Transitioning (Gender)"],"dta_other_subject_ssim":["Elia Chinó","Latin American Foundation for Social Action (FLAS)"],"dta_homosaurus_subject_ssim":["AIDS activists","AIDS education","Latino/a/x LGBTQ+ people","QTPOC","Trans women","Transitioning (Gender)"],"dta_lcsh_subject_ssim":["Christianity"],"date_created_search_tesim":["Sep September 11, 2020"],"date_temporal_search_tesim":["Apr April 24, 1964 to Sep September 11, 2020"],"date_created_display_ssim":["Sep. 11, 2020"],"date_temporal_display_ssim":["Apr. 24, 1964 to Sep. 11, 2020"],"dta_dates_ssim":["2020"],"dta_sortable_date_dtsi":"2020-09-11T00:00:00Z","ident_tesi":"9880vr27z","identifier_ssim":["9880vr27z"],"collection_name_ssim":["Oral Histories with People of Color"],"institution_name_ssim":["OUTWORDS"],"primary_institution_ssi":"OUTWORDS","depositor_ssim":["lbeegle1408@gmail.com"],"depository_tesim":["lbeegle1408@gmail.com"],"title_tesim":["Elia Chinó Oral History"],"title_ssim":["Elia Chinó Oral History"],"label_tesim":["Elia Chinó Oral History"],"description_tesim":["OUTWORDS interview with Elia Chinó conducted by Andrew Lush on September 11, 2020 in Huston, TX. Ames"],"label_tesim":["Interview with Sam Ames"],"description_tesim":["An interview with Sam Ames, a white transmasculine civil rights attorney, anti-conversion therapy activist, and theologian based in Oakland, California. At the time of this interview, he was the interim executive director of Our Family Coalition - an organization that advocates for and serves LGBTQ+ youth and families in the San Francisco Bay Area. Previously, he worked as interim executive director of Trans Lifeline, as the founder of the National Center for Lesbian Rights' anti-conversion therapy campaign Born Perfect, and as a chaplain at the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute at UCSF Medical Center. In this oral history interview, Ames discusses his Unitarian Universalist upbringing, values, and rootedness in faith communities; his beginnings in civil disobedience and LGBTQ+ civil rights work following Proposition 8's passage in California; his career as an anti-conversion therapy advocate and director of Trans Lifeline and the importance of work directly assisting queer and trans youth; and the future of LGBTQ+ civil rights litigation in the Trump area. Specifically, he discusses the differences between legislative and litigation strategies; the intricacies of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and its relationship to gender identity, sexual orientation, and sex-based protections; and the Title VII case before the Supreme Court at the time of the interview (Bostock v. Clayton County.)"],"mime_type_tesim":["image/jpeg"],"resource_type_tesim":["Moving image","Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ames, Sam"],"creator_ssim":["Ames, Sam"],"contributor_tesim":["Beam,
