She was bullied in her youth and then went on to join the U.S. Navy. but was dishonorably discharged after coming out as gay. These files detail her experiences as an HIV/AIDS survivor and activist, fundraising through drag performances. She was also recognized by former president Barack Obama for her services to the transgender community, especially in the Tenderloin. Also included are images of Felicia in slideshow format. Like many autobiographical fragments in Elizondo's collection, this material consists of isolated pages from published and unpublished sources which were found together.\r\n\r\nThis item comes from the Felicia “Flames” Elizondo papers (#2021-06) at the GLBT Historical Society. Felicia Elizondo, who performed as Felicia Flames, was a Chicana trans woman and drag queen associated with San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. She was a regular at Gene Compton's Cafeteria at the time of the Compton's Cafeteria Riot, a historic 1966 uprising by trans and queer people. Elizondo performed for many years at Aunt Charlie's Lounge alongside her close friend Vicki Marlane. This collection contains Elizondo's writings, photographs of her and her community, ephemera she collected about local drag and queer topics, and materials about Marlane and her In addition to her work with Pride Foundation, Viena was a Co-Chair both of United Territories of Pacific Islanders Alliance (UTOPIA,) an advocacy and mutual support organization led by and serving members of the Pacific Islander LGBTQI community, and of the first-ever Washington State LGBTQ Commission. In the first part of this oral history interview, Viena discusses her upbringing in Samoa surrounded by fa'afafine family members, mentors, and peers, her experiences of family life, school, religion, and fa'afafine identity as a child, and the beginnings of her trans activism after her move to Hawai'i at the age of 17 and subsequent estrangement from her family. Additionally, she discusses her thoughts on the value of experiential and cultural knowledge and research justice as part of her work, the insufficiency of mainstream, assimilationist narratives of transness, and the widespread exclusion of Indigenous understandings of gender and gender expression. In the second part of the interview, Viena discusses her move to Seattle and the relationship between her experiences in community with other sex workers and her political activism, her thoughts on fa'afafine and trans sisterhood and chosen family, transformative justice, and the problems of respectability in the nonprofit world, and her work with the Trans Justice Funding Project. Additionally, she discusses the lack of engagement around sex work among mainstream trans organizations, her thoughts on groups and activists doing vital work, and her visions for the Brown is the founder of Black Transmen, Inc., and served as its Director at the time of this oral history interview. He also works with the Black Trans Advocacy Coalition (BTAC, is highly active in community organizing efforts among Black trans men, and has garnered media attention for his work on employment discrimination against Black transgender people. Diamond Stylz is a Black trans woman, activist, and content creator based in Houston, Texas. At the time of this oral history interview, she was the founder and executive director of Black Trans Women, Inc., as well as being a YouTuber and the creator of Marsha's Plate, a politics and culture podcast. Stylz additionally won a high-profile First Amendment lawsuit against her high school, and was the first transgender woman to attend Jackson State University. In this oral history interview, Brown and Stylz discuss their backgrounds and initial forays into Black trans activism, shared experiences of discrimination, the joys, difficulties, responsibilities, and structural barriers inherent to Black trans community organizing, and their thoughts on visibility, representation, and the future. Specifically, they discuss foundational experiences of employment discrimination and discrimination within educational institutions, the foundings of Black Transmen, Inc. and Black Trans Women, Inc., Prior to her work with TJFP, Kapua worked in direct services for trans communities in Hawai'i, starting as a Peer Educator at Kulia Na Mamo, then eventually moving on to become the Transgender Service Manager at the Hawai'i Health \u0026 Harm Reduction Center. In this oral history interview, Kapua discusses her formative experiences in community with other trans women and sex workers in Honolulu as a young adult, the work of her and other trans women in establishing protections for and increasing access to services for trans people in Hawai'i, her work with the Trans Justice Funding Project, and the differences between TJFP's ethics and beliefs and mainstream philanthropic practices. Additionally, she discusses her experiences of incarceration and re-entry, the specifics of the Native Hawaiian māhū identity, movements for land sovereignty and the revival of the Hawaiian language,
