Sometime during her teen years, Beth experienced what she calls her first goddess vision: looking down at her chest, and seeing breasts. Around the same time, Beth began exploring San Francisco’s hippie culture, writing and performing folk music. In 1972, Beth applied to Stanford’s experimental sex reassignment surgery program. As the years passed, she began connecting with the bisexual community, where she felt more accepted than among the lesbian community. There, she joined a predominantly queer congregation for a support system through her coming out process. Joan’s books, Evolution’s Rainbow and Genial Gene, challenged prevailing theories about the biology of gender and sexuality. Looking back on her research and career, Joan shows us that she contributed to LGBTQ+ activism by doing what she does best: scientific research. Hillsboro, Oregon. Despite a happy childhood, Steph faced challenges as a closeted transgender man, identifying as a tomboy. In 1979, Steph moved to San Francisco, where he applied to the police department during a period of active recruitment of gay candidates (he identified as a lesbian at the time). At the age of 39, Steph came to realize that he was transgender. In a press conference, he publicly announced his identity, becoming a pioneer for transgender visibility and acceptance. Steph started training the San Francisco police department in transgender community awareness, the world’s first program of its kind. By the end of her PhD in 1992, she decided to transition to female. While living in extreme poverty, Susan seized on her newfound freedom to explore academics, politics, and art on her own terms – what she refers to now as her “unpaid residency in transgender studies.” Susan eventually returned to academia and went on to become Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at University of Arizona, where she served for five years as Director of the Institute for LGBT Studies and founded the university’s Transgender Studies Initiative. Susan reflects on channeling her anger at the mistreatment of trans people into her life’s work of public storytelling. Tori Cooper is a health and equity advocate, community organizer, author, and leading figure in the transgender and HIV communities. Tori’s life has been repeatedly devastated by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. When Tori was in middle school, her mother’s cousin died of AIDS complications on the same day her maternal grandfather died of cancer, which gutted her family. One of her childhood friends, Aubrey, died of complications from AIDS when Tori was 23. Aubrey was the first person to see that Tori was going to “make a beautiful woman one day,” before even Tori herself. In 2015, she founded and self-financed Advocates for Better Care Atlanta, LLC, a consulting firm created to educate and empower marginalized people, particularly prioritizing the needs of transgender people and those living with HIV. In 2021, Tori was appointed to President Joe Biden’s Advisory Council on HIV \u0026 AIDS, which is the first time that an out Black transgender person has served on the council. Tori has also been featured in the documentary Silent Epidemic, talking about the approach to trans issues and HIV in the South. She says it “took 20 years to become an overnight success.” Currently, she serves as the Director of Community Engagement for the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) Transgender Justice Initiative, which is
