Sometime during her teen years, Beth experienced what she calls her first goddess vision: looking down at her chest, and seeing breasts. Around the same time, Beth began exploring San Francisco’s hippie culture, writing and performing folk music. In 1972, Beth applied to Stanford’s experimental sex reassignment surgery program. As the years passed, she began connecting with the bisexual community, where she felt more accepted than among the lesbian community. Beth wrote for Telewoman, a lesbian newsletter, and in the 1990s, she worked with feminist academic Marcia Gallo on her thesis about the history of the Daughters of Bilitis."],"mime_type_tesim":["image/jpeg"],"resource_type_tesim":["Moving image"],"creator_tesim":["Elliott, Beth","Funk, Mason"],"creator_ssim":["Elliott, Beth","Funk, Mason"],"contributor_tesim":["Sandhu, A.K."],"contributor_ssim":["Sandhu, A.K."],"rights_tesim":["In copyright"],"language_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-2/eng"],"based_near_tesim":["http://www.geonames.org/5391959","http://www.geonames.org/5368361"],"based_near_ssim":["http://www.geonames.org/5391959","http://www.geonames.org/5368361"],"isPartOf_ssim":["5q47rn87k"],"isMemberOf_ssim":["5425k9888"],"temporal_coverage_tesim":["1969~","1971/1975"],"genre_tesim":["Oral Histories"],"genre_ssim":["Oral Histories"],"flagged_tesim":["No explicit content"],"other_subject_tesim":["Beth Elliott","Daughters of Bilitis (DOB)"],"other_subject_ssim":["Beth Elliott","Daughters of Bilitis (DOB)"],"dta_other_subject_tesim":["Beth Elliott","Daughters of Bilitis (DOB)"],"dta_subject_primary_searchable_tesim":["Gender dysphoria in youth","Lesbian separatism","LGBTQ+ musicians","Trans women","Transitioning (Gender)","Beth Elliott","Daughters of Bilitis (DOB)"],"dta_subject_alt_searchable_tesim":["Transitioning (Transgender)","Gender dysphoria in adolescence","Gender dysphoria in adolescents"],"date_start_dtsi":"2021-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_end_dtsi":"2021-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_created_search_ssim":["Aug August 12, 2021"],"date_temporal_search_ssim":["circa 1969","1971 to 1975"],"is_shown_at_tesim":["https://theoutwordsarchive.org/interview/beth-elliott/"],"is_shown_at_ssim":["https://theoutwordsarchive.org/interview/beth-elliott/"],"hosted_elsewhere_ssi":"1","language_label_ssim":["English"],"subject_geojson_facet_ssim":["{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-122.41942\",\"37.77493\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"San Francisco\"}}","{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-118.24368\",\"34.05223\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"Los Angeles\"}}"],"subject_coordinates_geospatial":["37.77493,-122.41942","34.05223,-118.24368"],"subject_geographic_hier_ssim":["California||San Francisco County||San Francisco","California||Los Angeles County||Los Angeles"],"subject_geographic_ssim":["San Francisco","California","San Francisco County","United States","Los Angeles","Los Angeles County"],"subject_geographic_tesim":["San Francisco","California","San Francisco County","United States","Los Angeles","Los Angeles County"],"has_thumbnail_ssi":"true","blacklight_display_ssi":"generic_file","has_file_content_ssi":"true","_version_":1860198606692155392,"timestamp":"2026-03-20T16:20:34.617Z","score":1.0},{"id":"1r66j1662","system_create_dtsi":"2025-11-06T21:48:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2026-04-15T22:55:52Z","date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-11-06T21:48:01Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-11-06T21:48:01Z","model_ssi":"GenericFile","has_model_ssim":["GenericFile"],"date_created_tesim":["2025-11-06"],"date_created_ssim":["2025-11-06"],"visibility_ssi":"public","new_model_ssi":"GenericObject","dta_all_subject_ssim":["Chicano/a/x LGBTQ+ people","Chicano/a/x transgender people","Drag queens","Latino/a/x LGBTQ+ people","Latino/a/x transgender people","Trans women","Transgender people in the military"],"dta_other_subject_ssim":["Compton's Cafeteria Riots"],"dta_homosaurus_subject_ssim":["Chicano/a/x LGBTQ+ people","Chicano/a/x transgender people","Drag queens","Latino/a/x LGBTQ+ people","Latino/a/x transgender people","Trans women","Transgender people in the military"],"date_issued_search_tesim":["circa 2010 to 2021"],"date_issued_display_ssim":["circa 2010 to 2021"],"dta_dates_ssim":["2010","2011","2012","2013","2014","2015","2016","2017","2018","2019","2020","2021"],"dta_sortable_date_dtsi":"2015-01-01T00:00:00Z","ident_tesi":"1r66j1662","identifier_ssim":["1r66j1662"],"collection_name_ssim":["Felicia Elizondo/Felicia Flames Collection"],"institution_name_ssim":["GLBT Historical Society"],"primary_institution_ssi":"GLBT Historical Society","depositor_ssim":["i.fellman@northeastern.edu"],"depository_tesim":["i.fellman@northeastern.edu"],"title_tesim":["Biography and Images of Felicia Elizondo"],"title_ssim":["Biography and Images of Felicia Elizondo"],"label_tesim":["Biography and Images of Felicia Elizondo"],"description_tesim":["This item contains potentially sensitive content related to racist and homophobic language. \r\n\r\nA comprehensive file of clippings from Felicia Elizondo's life experiences as a queer trans Mexican-American. She was bullied in her youth and then went on to join the U.S. Navy. but was dishonorably discharged after coming out as gay. These files detail her experiences as an HIV/AIDS survivor and activist, fundraising through drag performances. She was also recognized by former president Barack Obama for her services to the transgender community, especially in the Tenderloin. Also included are images of Felicia in slideshow format. Like many autobiographical fragments in Elizondo's collection, this material consists of isolated pages from published and unpublished sources which were found together.\r\n\r\nThis item comes from the Felicia “Flames” Elizondo papers (#2021-06) at the GLBT Historical Society. Felicia Elizondo, who performed as Felicia Flames, was a Chicana trans woman and drag queen associated with San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood. She was a regular at Gene Compton's Cafeteria at the time of the Compton's Cafeteria Riot, a historic 1966 uprising by trans and queer people. Elizondo performed for many years at Aunt Charlie's Lounge alongside her close friend Vicki Marlane. This collection contains Elizondo's writings, photographs of her and her community, ephemera she collected about local drag and queer topics, and materials about Marlane and her legacy."],"mime_type_tesim":["application/pdf"],"resource_type_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Elizondo, Felicia"],"creator_ssim":["Elizondo, Felicia"],"rights_tesim":["In copyright"],"language_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-2/eng"],"based_near_tesim":["http://www.geonames.org/5392171","http://www.geonames.org/12217947","http://www.geonames.org/5530022","http://www.geonames.org/5393021"],"based_near_ssim":["http://www.geonames.org/5392171","http://www.geonames.org/12217947","http://www.geonames.org/5530022","http://www.geonames.org/5393021"],"isPartOf_ssim":["xs55mc49j"],"isMemberOf_ssim":["b91dbe86-4192-4c77-b1fc-d1c323b21c8b"],"date_issued_tesim":["2010~/2021"],"genre_tesim":["Autobiographies"],"genre_ssim":["Autobiographies"],"flagged_tesim":["No explicit content"],"other_subject_tesim":["Compton's Cafeteria Riots"],"other_subject_ssim":["Compton's Cafeteria Riots"],"dta_other_subject_tesim":["Compton's Cafeteria Riots"],"dta_subject_primary_searchable_tesim":["Chicano/a/x LGBTQ+ people","Chicano/a/x transgender people","Drag queens","Latino/a/x LGBTQ+ people","Latino/a/x transgender people","Trans women","Transgender people in the military","Compton's Cafeteria Riots"],"date_start_dtsi":"2010-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_end_dtsi":"2021-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_issued_search_ssim":["circa 2010 to 2021"],"hosted_elsewhere_ssi":"0","language_label_ssim":["English"],"subject_geojson_facet_ssim":["{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-121.89496\",\"37.33939\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"San Jose\"}}","{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-122.41744\",\"37.78394\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"Tenderloin\"}}","{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-100.43704\",\"31.46377\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"San Angelo\"}}","{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Point\",\"coordinates\":[\"-121.69627\",\"37.23249\"]},\"properties\":{\"placename\":\"Santa Clara\"}}"],"subject_coordinates_geospatial":["37.33939,-121.89496","37.78394,-122.41744","31.46377,-100.43704","37.23249,-121.69627"],"subject_geographic_hier_ssim":["California||Santa Clara County||San Jose","California||San Francisco County||Tenderloin","Texas||Tom Green||San Angelo","California||Santa Clara"],"subject_geographic_ssim":["San Jose","California","Santa Clara County","United States","Tenderloin","San Francisco County","San Angelo","Texas","Tom Green","Santa Clara"],"subject_geographic_tesim":["San Jose","California","Santa Clara County","United States","Tenderloin","San Francisco County","San Angelo","Texas","Tom Green","Santa Clara"],"has_thumbnail_ssi":"true","blacklight_display_ssi":"generic_file","has_file_content_ssi":"true","_version_":1862578998296444928,"timestamp":"2026-04-15T22:55:52.953Z","score":1.0},{"id":"7h149q16q","system_create_dtsi":"2022-11-08T23:07:17Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2026-03-19T23:13:42Z","date_uploaded_dtsi":"2022-11-08T23:07:17Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2022-11-08T23:07:17Z","model_ssi":"GenericFile","has_model_ssim":["GenericFile"],"date_created_tesim":["2022-11-08"],"date_created_ssim":["2022-11-08"],"visibility_ssi":"public","new_model_ssi":"GenericObject","dta_all_subject_ssim":["Choreographers","Dancers","Gender roles","Non-binary people","White transgender people"],"dta_homosaurus_subject_ssim":["Gender roles","Non-binary people","White transgender people"],"dta_lcsh_subject_ssim":["Choreographers","Dancers"],"date_created_search_tesim":["Nov November 11, 2021"],"date_created_display_ssim":["Nov. 11, 2021"],"dta_dates_ssim":["2021"],"dta_sortable_date_dtsi":"2021-11-11T00:00:00Z","ident_tesi":"7h149q16q","identifier_ssim":["7h149q16q"],"collection_name_ssim":["Audio and Video Clips and Transcripts"],"institution_name_ssim":["Jean-Nickolaus Tretter Collection, University of Minnesota"],"primary_institution_ssi":"Jean-Nickolaus Tretter Collection, University of Minnesota","depositor_ssim":["arona.s@northeastern.edu"],"depository_tesim":["arona.s@northeastern.edu"],"title_tesim":["Interview with Canyon Carballosa"],"title_ssim":["Interview with Canyon Carballosa"],"label_tesim":["Interview with Canyon Carballosa"],"description_tesim":["An interview with Canyon Carballosa, a white Cuban queer trans nonbinary dancer and movement maker based in Los Angeles. Bowers is the first woman with a lived trans experience to perform gender-affirming surgeries, and is one of the most prolific gender-affirming surgeons in the United States. In addition to her work, she has had a prominent media presence on trans issues, specifically issues around trans health care, for over two decades. In this oral history interview, Bowers discusses her upbringing in suburban Wisconsin and initial entry into medicine through obstetrics, the relationship between her initial forays into trans medicine and her personal transition, her education and surgical practice, and her thoughts on trans medical care, politics, theory, and the use of trans issues in the political arena. Specifically, she discusses her work under Dr. Biber and thoughts on being a trans practitioner, her practices in Colorado and California, transitioning and parenting, and her thoughts on trans athletics, autogynephilia theory, hormone replacement therapy and puberty blockers for adolescents and youth, the political and press uproar over such care, and WPATH's history, recent developments, and future trajectory."],"mime_type_tesim":["image/jpeg"],"resource_type_tesim":["Moving image","Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bowers, Marci"],"creator_ssim":["Bowers, Marci"],"contributor_tesim":["Beam, health therapist, gender health specialist, and trans health activist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. At the time of this interview, she worked at a clinic in Oakland, California supporting trans and gender nonconforming adolescents and adults in accessing gender-affirming health care. In addition to her clinical work, she is active in grassroots efforts to decolonize and depathologize trans health, reduce barriers to care, and increase the presence of BIPOC professionals in the field. In this oral history interview, Luz Hernandez discusses her work with trans and gender nonconforming adolescents and their families, her entry into trans politics and health work in the Bay Area in the mid-2000s, and her thoughts on and experiences within trans healthcare. Specifically, she discusses the relationship between the hormone care and HIV/public health spheres of trans health, changes in trans healthcare since the early 2000s, differing philosophies of care in pediatric trans healthcare as well as its recent exploitation as a political wedge issue, the persistent issue of provider letter requirements and her work with the Gender Affirming Letter Access Project (GALAP,) the history of Eurocentric concepts of pathological transness and their lasting impacts, and the 2019 USPATH panel she participated in on decolonizing and depathologizing trans Janetta discovered her affinity for organizing while incarcerated and decided to dedicate herself to systemic work to help other Black trans people in carceral systems. When Joan first came out as transgender and publicly transitioned, she moved to San Francisco. There, she joined a predominantly queer congregation for a support system through her coming out process. Joan’s books, Evolution’s Rainbow and Genial Gene, challenged prevailing theories about the biology of gender and sexuality. Looking back on her research and career, Joan shows us that she contributed to LGBTQ+ activism by doing what she does best: scientific research.
