Bowers is the first woman with a lived trans experience to perform gender-affirming surgeries, and is one of the most prolific gender-affirming surgeons in the United States. In addition to her work, she has had a prominent media presence on trans issues, specifically issues around trans health care, for over two decades. In this oral history interview, Bowers discusses her upbringing in suburban Wisconsin and initial entry into medicine through obstetrics, the relationship between her initial forays into trans medicine and her personal transition, her education and surgical practice, and her thoughts on trans medical care, politics, theory, and the use of trans issues in the political arena. In this oral history interview with Myra Billund-Phibbs, Preston discusses his Catholic upbringing in New Jersey, time in the lesbian community, and his experiences of transition, his experience working with the Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition and the Trans Health Conferences in Minneapolis in the mid-to-late 2000s, his experiences in recovery and founding of the first trans-centered recovery group in Minneapolis with Arin McNeese, and his thoughts on holistic health, nutrition, and the state of trans health care generally. In this oral history interview, Callanan discusses his upbringing on the South Side of Chicago, his entry into organizing within a small trans community at the University of Vermont in the early 2000's, and his years of extensive work within the Philadelphia Trans Health and Wellness Conference. Specifically, he discusses the origins of the conference, its early work around diagnostic criteria, trying to expand medical access for trans and gender nonconforming people and trans competency among providers, divisions within its organizers, tensions as more cis providers began to attend, and its eventual subsumption under the nonprofit Mazzoni Center. Additionally, Callanan offers his thoughts on the lack of general trans competency in many medical fields, especially in emergency care, and his decision to enter medical school in part to remedy that In this oral history interview, Rapues discusses her upbringing and experiences of migration as a child, her early politicization and organizing with other queer and trans people of color, her work with the San Francisco Department of Public Health, and her thoughts on and experiences of trans health. Specifically, she discusses structural issues in trans health care including barriers to access, lack of data and research, and hostile health care environments, the radical changes in trans health At the time of this oral history interview, she was a Co-Founder and Co-Director of Open Flame Theatre, an all-trans theatre ensemble based in Minneapolis and western Wisconsin, and additionally worked as a social worker and theater educator with the homeless. Prior to that work, she served as the Executive Director of the Trans Youth Support Network (TYSN,) a Minneapolis-based community organization primarily serving trans youth of color, as the overnight desk staff at Avenues for Homeless Youth in downtown Minneapolis, and as a member of the collective running The Exchange, a community space serving queer and trans people at 34th Street and Chicago Avenue in South Minneapolis. She additionally was part of the early 2010s campaign to free CeCe McDonald after she survived an assault and was imprisoned. In this interview with Myra Billund-Phibbs, Burgess discusses her upbringing by hippie parents in southern Maine, her experiences in school, and coming into an understanding of herself as trans before moving to Western Massachusetts and ultimately travelling for years as a homeless punk, her settling in Minneapolis at a friend's suggestion and entry into the South Minneapolis queer/trans punk/anarchist/collectivist scene of the 2000s, and her entry into trans community organizing work. Specifically, she discusses going to the support groups at SafeZone and how that led her to District 202, her work at Avenues for Homeless Youth and the Minnesota Trans Health Coalition (MTHC,) and her eventual assuming of the Executive Director role at TYSN, which she discusses at length, in terms of the organization's role, work, youth base, issues, split from District 202, and shortcomings. She additionally discusses the structural weaknesses of similar nonprofit organizations and the divide between professionals and the youth they aim to serve, the impacts of TYSN on Minneapolis, her In this oral history interview, Amador discusses his upbringing outside of San Diego and politicization in community with other students of color at UC Santa Barbara, his work with the Fellowship of Reconciliation and how it led him into training and education work, his thoughts on nonprofits and philanthropy and their relationship to social movements, and his work with Training for Change and the Trans Justice Funding Project's Fund for Trans Generations.
