After winning Closet Ball Queen and beginning her transition, Karina became increasingly involved with the queer community and activist work, including advocating for gender-affirming housing for incarcerated people, for survival sex to be legalized and protected, and to expand healthcare to the trans community living on the streets. Dakota in 1953 (Sophia continues to use both names in different contexts and uses he/she/they pronouns). After high school, Sophia moved to San Francisco to study counseling psychology. Although San Francisco had been a sanctuary of free thought and expression for many LGBTQ+ young adults, Jon found the experience to be overwhelming. Sophia moved to Idaho and finally felt safe to dress in women’s clothes in the wilderness. Sophia worked as a librarian at the Challis Public Library, where she faced adversity due to her advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and gender identity, and was eventually fired. Throughout their life, Sophia has been committed to activism, political involvement, and artistic endeavors, always striving for a more inclusive and accepting In the early 2000s, Tracee entered her career in advocacy. She founded the Juxtaposed Center for Transformation, Inc., co-founded the Trans Housing Atlanta program (THAP), advised on curriculum development for ‘Law Enforcement and Transgender Community Training’ under the Obama administration, and has participated in many other initiatives. Tracee McDaniel is an inspiring advocate for trans civil rights and in sharing her story, she hopes to use her voice to educate people and to be
