Ceyenne ran away from home multiple times, but she made the decision to leave for good around the age of fifteen. She eventually found her community, but it was a difficult place to discover. As an activist, Ceyenne has championed efforts to insert the neglected transgender identity into the national queer rights conversation. Always focusing on tomorrow, Ceyenne established the renowned Gays and Lesbians Living In A Transgender Society organization ( G.L.I.T.S.), which provides housing, transportation, and other support Assigned male at birth, Earline felt increasingly disconnected with religion as she found herself feeling more feminine and realizing that her sexuality was different. As a teenager, she was sent to Maple Glen, and then Cedar Knoll, two correctional facilities that tried to change her into a straight man. In her 20s, Earline joined the Inner City AIDS Network (ICAN), funded by the DC Department of Health, to become an HIV peer specialist. She eventually became the transgender coordinator at the HIV Community Coalition (HCC) and has organized over 400 funerals, helping people find peace in their final place of In this oral history with Myra Billund-Phibbs, O'Hartigan discusses her upbringing in rural Minnesota and early adult life as a transsexual in Minneapolis' gay scene, her experiences with Donald Hastings, the University of Minnesota's sex reassignment surgery program, her lawsuit against the state, and lobbying the State Senate on funding for surgeries, her move to the Northwest and various transsexual rights campaigns in Washington and Oregon, specifically her suit against the Washington State Patrol related to their pre-employment polygraph policy, her cases against Seattle-area gay and lesbian organizations, her work on the Portland nondiscrimination legislation, her work with the Filisa Vistima Foundation, and her thoughts on Filisa Vistima's work, life, and events surrounding her death. From age 7, she realized she was not a boy but struggled to find a label to define herself. At age 39, she began her medical transition. Jessica’s life has revolved around three main axes: political advocacy, healthcare, and music. Her dedication to transgender-related data collection led her to work in HIV care for many years, including completing the Transgender Needs Assessment Survey (WTNAS), which she considers one of her greatest achievements. Her advocacy led to the establishment of trans-specific HIV care programs, making significant contributions to the health and well-being of transgender communities. In 1999 she became the first openly transgender artist to release a CD. Her work as an activist, scholar, and artist has garnered recognitions such as the Public Service Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Sex and the Distinguished Service Award from the After winning Closet Ball Queen and beginning her transition, Karina became increasingly involved with the queer community and activist work, including advocating for gender-affirming housing for incarcerated people, for survival sex to be legalized and protected, and to expand healthcare to the trans community living on the streets. For as long as she could remember, Lisa felt that she should have been born a girl. Lisa entered into the military at age nineteen for four years, choosing to live off-site rather than risk military staff combing through her possessions and finding her lingerie. After spending the previous two years living life as a woman when not at work, Lisa came out as transgender at age 47. She realized she finally wanted to begin hormone therapy to medically transition, and began traveling to California for treatment. After reconnecting with religion, Lisa became a teacher and delivered lectures at local colleges about the transgender community.
