Prior to her work with SFDPH, Rapues was the Interim Director of UCSF's Center of Excellence for Transgender Health (CoE.) She additionally is a Co-Chair and board member of Openhouse, a housing and support organization for LGBTQ seniors in San Francisco. In this oral history interview, Rapues discusses her upbringing and experiences of migration as a child, her early politicization and organizing with other queer and trans people of color, her work with the San Francisco Department of Public Health, and her thoughts on and experiences of trans health. Specifically, she discusses structural issues in trans health care including barriers to access, lack of data and research, and hostile health care environments, the radical changes in trans health care since the early 2000s, her thoughts on the world of HIV health care, WPATH, and USPATH, social determinants of health, and violence against Black and brown trans women, and the impacts of COVID In this oral history interview, Demmons discusses his upbringing in south Los Angeles County and his entry as a young adult into the Los Angeles Black lesbian scene, his move to San Francisco and experiences of transition, his work with the LA Gay and Lesbian Center, CCWP, and UCSF Center of Excellence, his thoughts on anti-Black racism, white supremacy, and false meritocracy in white-dominated LGBT activist and public health spaces and organizations, and the origins of trans medicine and American medicine generally in slavery and colonization. Additionally, he discusses his time at the Transgender Law Center as its leadership shifted, the influence of his mother and San Francisco State's Black Studies program on his politics, and the
