In this oral history interview, Mananzala discusses his background and initial forays into activism, his work with trans youth of color in New York City with FIERCE in the early to mid 2000s, the distinction between grassroots and mainstream queer and trans movements, and the lessons gleamed from FIERCE's structure, philosophy, and operations. Specifically, he discusses the differing priorities of grassroots, people of color-led movements for justice and more mainstream, white-led movements for visibility, rights, and mainstream recognition, the relationship between philanthropy and grassroots movements, and the urgency of addressing violence against Black and Brown trans
