Coloured process print, ca. 1903."],"description_tesim":["Part of James Gardiner Collection: photograph album labelled ‘Drag’.","Jack Brown, in drag, is dancing with his partner, Charles Gregory, holding an umbrella; Gregory wears a top hat and smart attire. His cane leans against the painted backdrop. This offset litho printed card would indicate that the image was sufficiently popular to be produced in large quantities. Brown and Gregory performed the Cake-Walk, a very popular dance, as part of “Les Joyeux Nègres\"at the Nouveau Cirque in Paris from 1902-1903."],"mime_type_tesim":["image/jpeg"],"resource_type_tesim":["Still Image"],"rights_tesim":["Copyright undetermined"],"language_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-2/eng"],"isPartOf_ssim":["r207tp63d"],"isMemberOf_ssim":["m900nt595"],"date_issued_tesim":["1903-01-01"],"genre_tesim":["Photographs","Prints"],"genre_ssim":["Photographs","Prints"],"flagged_tesim":["No explicit content"],"lcsh_subject_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85064634","http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2004004533"],"lcsh_subject_ssim":["http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85064634","http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2004004533"],"other_subject_tesim":["Jack Brown","Charles Gregory"],"other_subject_ssim":["Jack Brown","Charles Gregory"],"dta_other_subject_tesim":["Charles Gregory","Jack Brown"],"dta_subject_primary_searchable_tesim":["BIPOC","Black LGBTQ+ people","Cakewalk (Dance)","Female impersonators","LGBTQ+ people of color","Charles Gregory","Jack Brown"],"dta_subject_alt_searchable_tesim":["Cross-dressers","Crossdressers","Drag queens","Impersonators of women","Impersonators, Female","Queens, Drag","Cake walk (Dance)"],"date_start_dtsi":"1903-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_end_dtsi":"1903-01-01T00:00:00Z","date_issued_search_ssim":["Jan January 1, 1903"],"analog_format_tesim":["1 print : process print, with watercolour ;"],"is_shown_at_tesim":["https://wellcomelibrary.org/item/b20448831"],"is_shown_at_ssim":["https://wellcomelibrary.org/item/b20448831"],"hosted_elsewhere_ssi":"1","language_label_ssim":["English"],"has_thumbnail_ssi":"true","blacklight_display_ssi":"generic_file","has_file_content_ssi":"true","_version_":1859911613671276544,"timestamp":"2026-03-17T12:18:56.744Z","score":1.0},{"id":"8w32r591x","system_create_dtsi":"2018-01-31T20:25:19Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2026-03-17T12:18:54Z","date_uploaded_dtsi":"2018-01-31T20:25:19Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2018-01-31T20:25:19Z","model_ssi":"GenericFile","has_model_ssim":["GenericFile"],"date_created_tesim":["2018-01-31"],"date_created_ssim":["2018-01-31"],"visibility_ssi":"public","new_model_ssi":"GenericObject","dta_altLabel_all_subject_ssim":["Cross-dressers","Crossdressers","Drag queens","Impersonators of women","Impersonators, Female","Queens, Drag","Cake walk (Dance)"],"dta_all_subject_ssim":["BIPOC","Black LGBTQ+ people","Cakewalk (Dance)","Female impersonators","LGBTQ+ people of color"],"dta_other_subject_ssim":["Charles Gregory","Jack Brown"],"dta_homosaurus_subject_ssim":["BIPOC","Black LGBTQ+ people","LGBTQ+ people of color"],"dta_lcsh_subject_ssim":["Cakewalk (Dance)","Female impersonators"],"date_issued_search_tesim":["Jan January 1, 1903"],"date_issued_display_ssim":["Jan. 1, 1903"],"dta_dates_ssim":["1903"],"dta_sortable_date_dtsi":"1903-01-01T00:00:00Z","ident_tesi":"8w32r591x","identifier_ssim":["8w32r591x"],"collection_name_ssim":["James Gardiner 20th Century Drag Postcards"],"institution_name_ssim":["Wellcome Collection"],"primary_institution_ssi":"Wellcome Collection","depositor_ssim":["mcintosh.r@northeastern.edu"],"depository_tesim":["mcintosh.r@northeastern.edu"],"title_tesim":["Two black actors, one in drag, dancing the Cake-Walk in Paris. The Cake-Walk was a dance which originated in the United States, apocryphally as a form of entertainment developed by black slaves on cotton plantations in the Deep South. It increased in popularity, and by the turn of the nineteenth century had developed into commercial entertainment that was exported to Europe. It rapidly became a 'dance craze' in Paris, and the catalogued photograph shows two black (American?) performers, both men, one wearing a frilly bonnet and ruffled dress, performing at the Nouveau Cirque (James Gardiner)"],"mime_type_tesim":["image/jpeg"],"resource_type_tesim":["Still Image"],"rights_tesim":["Copyright undetermined"],"language_tesim":["http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/iso639-2/eng"],"based_near_tesim":["http://www.geonames.org/2988507"],"based_near_ssim":["http://www.geonames.org/2988507"],"isPartOf_ssim":["r207tp63d"],"isMemberOf_ssim":["m900nt595"],"date_issued_tesim":["1903-01-01"],"genre_tesim":["Photographs","Prints"],"genre_ssim":["Photographs","Prints"],"alternative_tesim":["Le cake-walk.
