His areas of research include musicology and sociology. Fernandez-Alemany published two books on homosexual male culture, Mariquitas y Marimachos published in 1999, which he wrote in collaboration with Andres Sciolla while studying under Sciolla at UCSD, and Heterogender Homosexuality in Honduras published in 2002, which he wrote in collaboration with Stephen Murray. Written in a question/answer format, Mariquitas y Marimachos provides answers to common misconceptions about homosexuality, including misconceptions about AIDS (la SIDA) in the Hispanic community. Heterogender Homosexuality in Honduras is an anthropological study of the sexual culture of transexual women and of men who identify as homosexual or who identify as heterosexual but have sexual
