After graduating from college, Piel worked briefly in the adult film industry and in gay theater. In 1982, she became involved in Gay Pride Day and chaired the rally in 1984. Piel then became executive director of Friends and Advocates for Individual Rights (FAIRPAC), a political action group. During the 1990s, Piel worked for the American Foundation for AIDS Research (AmFAR) for which she was liaison to the gay community and organized fundraisers and events for AIDS awareness and safe partying. Prints of performers are mostly studio portraits, proofs, and other publicity shots created by professional photographers, with the majority of images representing Carroll Wallace and a fewer number depicting other members of the Revue, such as Bobby Lane, Guy Doran, and Les-Lee. Portraits of other female impersonators, some of whom are identified, are also included in the collection, although their precise association with the Carroll Revue is unknown. In addition to photographic documentation, the collection contains a small amount of printed material, including a press clipping and two announcements in French about a performance by Carroll Wallace as “Guilda” at the Théâtre National in Montreal, Canada, and a Carroll Revue brochure. Correspondence is limited to a single item: an undated letter from Juan José to Carroll Wallace briefly describing a book about “Boy-lesque.”","The Carroll Revue, the subject of this collection, was a California-based performance troupe of female impersonators founded by drag artist Carroll Wallace in or around 1954. Wallace, who began performing in drag on Hollywood’s famed Sunset Strip, assembled and headed the stage show with the help of his wife Ruth, who acted as the show’s producer. Also known as the Carroll Wallace Follies and the Carroll Wallace Show, the Revue involved a number of performers—singers, dancers, and comedians—who took to the stage in a variety of female guises, donning an array of costumes. Members of the Revue included such performers as Bobby Lane, Guy Doran, Jackie Phillips, Russell Reed, Ray Saunders, and Les-Lee. The Carroll Revue traveled widely from its home base in the San Francisco Bay area, performing at such international venues as the Grand Opera House in Manila, Philippines, the Tivoli Circuit in Sydney, Australia, and the Latin Quarter in Tokyo, Japan. The well-known San Francisco night spot featuring acts by female impersonators, Finocchio’s, was also a regular stop on the Revue’s itinerary, along with such venues in the western United States as the Tropics Room in Portland, Oregon, the Rendezvous Club in Fairbanks, Alaska, and the Blue Note Night Club in Honolulu, Hawaii. Since the 1980s, he has served on several lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) and film arts organizations in the United States and Europe. Most notably, he helped coordinate several LGBT pride events and LGBT film festivals including many in Budapest. He has chronicled LGBT lives in Central and Eastern Europe since 1988. In 2007, he made Belgrade Pride, a short film about Belgrade's first LGBT pride celebration in 2001.\r\nHe attributes his interest in LGBT people in Eastern and Central Europe to several events. In 1987 he served on the Northern California and San Francisco/Bay Area Steering Committees for the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. Its slogan, “we are everywhere,” sparked his interest in the lives of LGBT people from other countries. His work for the 1988 San Francisco Freedom Day Parade and Celebration put him in contact with LGBT people from over 40 different countries, including Ilse Kornreich, founder of Argentina’s first lesbian organization. Kornreich told Conrad of a gay man who was kicked out of East Germany into West Germany for erecting a pink triangle in honor of holocaust victims. The records document all aspects of the organization, including its history, structure, and activities from its founding in 1978 to the present. The collection provides a rich resource for the study of GLAD, anti-discrimination efforts, and the legal issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and people with HIV in the United States.\r\nMaterial on GLAD’s founding and history are found in the collection, as is material related to the administration of the organization. The Board of Directors and Executive Director files include committee reports, a complete set of meeting minutes and packets, correspondence, and topical files providing a rich overview of GLAD’s activities. Financial records consist of auditor, public charity, and general budget reports, which provide information about GLAD’s financial status and growth over the years. Legal files consist of reports and litigation and amicus files, documenting only a few of the cases in which GLAD was involved. The Public Affairs files provide substantive information which can be used to reconstruct GLAD’s history and more generally the history of the legal status of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and people with HIV in the United States. Of particular note are GLAD’s publications and the news clippings they maintained. The Education files include documentation on GLAD’s educational and outreach missions, including its Lawyer Referral Service, InfoLine (a phone based guidance and referral service), forums, and presentations. The Development files document fundraising. In addition to the records generated by GLAD, the collection includes a substantial number of newsletters, flyers, and brochures (Non-GLAD Publications) of various local and national lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender organizations (usually only a few items per organization). The collection catalog and index cards detail the contents of the entire collection, including the printed component.\r\nThe first piece Laura Bailey bought in the 1960's was a digest entitled \"Muscle Man in Silks\" about a body builder who \"had a weakness for women's silk lingerie.\" She went on to gather, widely and internationally, any material that exhibited or commented on gender variation: photographs, postcards, flyers and programs for night clubs, sheet music, and clippings. These cover a wide range of gender expression, from drag queens and kings to cowgirls and bearded ladies. This finding aids lists materials as received from Laura Bailey – most of them gathered into thematic groups in scrapbooks and photo albums.","As a natural born lifetime collector of the ephemeral, Laura Bailey has bought and sold, as both a collector and a rare book and rare paper collectibles dealer professionally in the international markets. In addition to real life experience, Laura's academic credentials include New York University and The New School for Social Research.\r\nHer life experiences included touring in a band as a multitalented musician - (trumpet, organ, all keyboard instruments, and electronic music),- working in the hospitality industry as both manager and owner of a resort hotel in Eastern Long Island, and owning a bookstore in New York City's historic Greenwich Village. Laura Bailey was a conscientious activist even before Stonewall in 1969, and remains a staunch supporter of Human Rights today. Laura's expansive varied collections have included beat poetry, original 20th Century art, Mayan art, stamps, and erotica. Laura continues her passions for collecting materials reflective of cultural diversity, societal taboos, and those discriminated against, ignored, persecuted and forgotten. The images are crafted using the digital equivalents of photography, stage makeup, and cosmetic surgery.","Matthew Charles Rosenblum was born on June 7, 1947, in New Jersey. His interest in photography began when he was eight years old, and by age 16 he amassed an extensive collection of United States national parks images. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1970, and then earned an advanced degree in psychology from the New School for Social Research. Between 1974 and 1977, he took month-long photographic explorations in the Andes and Amazonas and Southeast Asia. In 1978, he met John Piazza, and for the next twenty-two years they traveled extensively in the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia where Rosenblum captured expressions of culture and lifestyle in his portraits of the locals. Beginning in 2000, they became seasonal residents of Cherry Grove on Fire Island, New York, where they started to go by the name of The Hoffas. The name originated from Rosenblum's adoption of Gimmi Hoffa as his nom-de-caméra and the local lore that Jimmy Hoffa, the Teamster leader, was in a federal witness protection program and living in Cherry Grove. Rosenblum's photographs are exhibited in homes and business establishments in Cherry Grove.
