Digital Transgender Archive

Alexis Francois (1936-2023) was a drag queen, hairstylist, and wig maker in San Francisco from late 1960s to the early 2000s, although she continued to create art after her retirement. Francois kept detailed photographic records of her costumes, and many of the photographs in this collection depict her performances, costumes, and wigs. The collection also contains the patent for and correspondence about the development of Curl-It, a hairbrush that Francois designed to better keeps curls in place in the 1950s when she was a hairstylist and cosmetologist. Alexis Francois was genderfluid and used she/her and he/him pronouns.
