Digital Transgender Archive

This collection spotlights the experiences of transgender people in prison, with an emphasis on incarcerated individuals with HIV/AIDS. These materials move between the private and the public, narrating personal experiences from the perspectives of prisoners and documenting structural efforts for prison and public health reform. The majority of items relate to the life and activism of Dee Farmer, a transgender woman who sued prison officials for “deliberate indifference” after being repeatedly assaulted while detained in male prisons. Materials include newsletters, e-mail and print correspondence, articles from law journals, government records, newspaper clippings, and ephemera from activist organizations.
